It's like choosing between Menace 2 Society or Shawshank Redemption, lol. Totally different vibes and purposes...but both amazing in their own right. There's no real wrong answer, just some preference shyt. "Illmatic" is more my speed but "Doggystyle" is a Top 5 rap album ever for me, maybe Top 3. I preferred it over "Da Chronic".

Does anyone account that Illmatic was heavily bootlegged in NYC? Which also was the main place for the sales to come from for that album when talking about sales?

It's a reason it took so long to go plat or why stores couldn't "give that shyt away." nikkas that should have been supporting all year 1 had it already and at large. You know the lyrics

NYC acts weren’t really moving units until Biggie. I get the bootleg argument, but Wu didn’t sell records either until Meth. The nikkas that were bootlegging illmatic were never going to buy it anyway imo.

I also don’t think you can compare Nas’ buzz in NYC to the nationwide hysteria around Snoop Dogg. At all.

Snoop’s stardom was years worth of planning, placements and hit records (Deep Cover, G Thang, Dre Day, etc), orchestrated by the producer who oversaw the biggest selling gangster rap group of all time (that was NOT the focus with illmatic). Even with all that Snoop still had to deliver on the hype, and he did.

snoop sold 800k week one in 93! hell no nas wasn’t on that level. in terms of artists who ever have been you’re talking Eminem, 50 Cent and Lil Wayne. Maybe drake. And that’s it.

It's way better. Ilmatic is overrated mid grade music. It's legacy is due to East coast bias media.

Exactly! Doggystyle was a worldwide phenomenon when it was released, while the popularity of Illmatic was primarily regionally based.

Notice the theme.
To be considered a top album outside the east, you have to do big numbers.
To be a "classic" from the east, you can do poorly, just as long as the east coast bias media gets behind you to help paint a fictitious picture of what your album means.

You will never see an album from outside the east, from the mid nineties, that gets classic credits UNLESS it killed it at retail. But them east coasters have a rubber stamp at classic status.
even with the numbers they give it the "regional" tag

RUN DMC, Beastie Boys, LL, etc. were going plat and multi-plat years before anyone knew who BIG was.

The idea that BIG "saved" the east because they weren't selling is :mjlol:and was largely cooked up after he died. As part of the myth surrounding him.

I get it, but "Ready To Die" only went 2x plat while he was alive. NY acts were doing that, and more before, during and after BIG.

Fred.
