Say So had that late 70’s Disco vibe

Jealous Type has that late 80’s Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis vibe

The thing that I’m looking at is how Doja Cat called her albums Planet Her and Hot Pink cash grabs and albums she did for the money when she was promoting her last album, Scarlett

Now it seems like she’s hopping back on the Planet Her and Hot Pink (Pop) wave again

My guess is her label didn’t like the feedback Scarlett had and they wanted her to go back to the Pop that she’s had the most success with.

With this album Vie, she’s even working with Jack Antonoff (same writer and producer who works with Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo etc)

I get that artist have to compromise from time to time but this shyt got me looking at her like :skip:

Because this seems like she’s going backwards

I thought the new album would be even more hip hop and i thought she’d drop the songs she recorded with Alchemist too

I remember when she was talking bout wanting to work with 9th Wonder and letting him produce some songs for her

Then she was taking bout doing a Punk album

She was even talking bout doing music with a band and making music that was reflective of what she grew up listening that her mom use to play: Badu, D’Angelo, 2pac, Jamiroquai etc

Now it just feels like she’s just conforming and doing what everyone else is doing and making another cash grab album that she said her two albums before Scarlett were

She can do the Pop music effortlessly and it’s not like her Pop music is bad, but I thought she was an artist who was different from the rest of these artists of her era but now she just seems like more of a follower.
At this point in the game if you got millions of followers and a big name pretty much 90% of everything done is outside of the artist control and they have to follow the metrics and social reactions and expectations, she's a product not a person when it comes to that bottom line

No buzz. Should have done scarlett 2

While I’ve been scratching my head at her going back the Pop route after she called her previous pop albums “cash grabs”, I’m sure her label wanted her to go back the pop route to make back what they loss after Scarlett

But a Scarlett 2 would’ve been predictable

I wanted her to go in another direction which was either an album with a live band or a Punk album, both are albums she’s been talking about in the past

But Doja is talented so I’ll give this new album a listen and see what it sounds like

True and that’s always been apart of the game, even before streaming and instagram

So Scarlett was considered a flop? That’s crazy. That album was so good. I’m not hype for this album at all

I’m not sure, because I don’t pay attention to sales, but the way she seems to now be sort of look down on the album now (calling it a “massive fart” she just needed to get out) and returning to her Pop sound after shytting on her previous pop albums (Planet Her and Hot Pink) calling them “cash grabs” just screams like her label wanted a return to form with pop singles/pop album or they along with her weren’t quite satisfied with the reception of Scarlet

I agree with you, Scarlet was a really great album

Her going back to her Pop sound wasn’t something I thought she’d be doing after Scarlet but I’ll listen to it because Doja is talented.

She’s been talking about doing Punk music and an album with a live band, that’s what I thought the new album would be

Lowkey she may be washed
This rollout feels less eventful

And this material and imagery feels a bit safe and familiar

Maybe she'll bring the hits again but I'm not seeing it yet either

There's usually an element of controversy with her which is not happening currently

How do you guys judge whether an album has buzz or hype in 2025? With specifics.
Genuinely curious.
Usually there's some viral element going on

But maybe she's peaked commercially and is playing it safer this time

It reminds me of how Tyler the Creator kinda lost his edge, but still makes music that his audience enjoys, even if it isn't likely to grow any further

Yeah I think this time she’s purposely taking a quieter approach to the music and just letting it speak for itself, after the “loud” Scarlet album and her attitude around that time promoting the album. especially because when Scarlet came out, she was shytting on her previous Pop albums and now she’s back to making pop songs

She’s probably trying to get out of the way of the music this time

Agreed and it makes sense

The content and context is being more grown and happy with life
