Dollar Stores in America have become the fastest growing food chains. One woman showed what you can buy on a 70$ budget. Is this sustainable?

The sodium levels even at minimum servings are crazy.

Funny I was in area yesterday where the only stores they can keep are family dollar/dollar general types. The residents will literally go out their way to other areas to buy groceries etc

I believe at this point it’s a mental thing. The tried & true logic

Aldi is good enough...
people are just so addicted to eating processed crap

Vegetables and fruit arent that much
I’ve been frequenting them much more lately as the prices are lower compared to others.

Just gotta find me a consistent fruit/veggie spot. Pete’s & Mariano been hit or miss.

Exactly. Even meat. Chicken breast you can find for 2-4 dollars a pound for some decent quality chicken. Groceries are only super expensive if you’re buying processed and premade stuff . Chicken, rice and veggies still cheap.

ye there fruit/vegetables can be iffy.

Mexican grocery stores are generally decent.
Even those Mexicans that sell fruit out of the truck can be a decent lick.
In the summer there is a watermelon stand out south (sounds like youre in Chicago)

Also depending on how you cook frozen fruit/veggies can be a good option

The thing about fruits and veggies .. is it's all perishable..

Some of that stuff goes bad in 2-3 days and you have to recoup . Which is time and gas and prep .. thats where it gets expensive, then if you have a family of 4 and not just yourself ... That graph is by the cup

This is very true. It’s almost a science to get a bang for your buck with fruit at least. Most veggies have a pretty decent length shelf life. But like you said some fruit can go bad in 2-3 days. So I never buy fruit bulk. I’ll just buy it like 1 or sometimes 2 times a week for a few days out.

Why didn't she show the price per item.

I’m sorry but you CANNOT buy food at the dollar store. I wouldn’t even buy gum or mints there 🤮

I wouldn’t trust shyt out of there.

I don’t understand how ppl be buying snacks at places like TJMAXX, Marshalls, etc. Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you need to eat it.

Dollar Tree got the same brands as a lot of other supermarkets :hubie: it's what sets it apart from the rest of these type of stores, don't sleep...only thing iffy is half the food selection in the video :patrice: the only problem with extreme couponing culture is all the processed and canned shyt to save a buck :scust: and you'd find the same trash in your local grocer

Real talk. Bought some damn arugula last night for like $4. Get 2 of those?? That’s enough to make my salads for damn near the whole week.

As opposed to literally buying ready made salads at the grocery store or a $10-$20+ salad at a restaurant for lunch everyday.

Well, Dollar Tree has improved immensely since taking on higher-priced goods.

I think spending $70 at Dollar Tree for groceries could be good for “add-ons,” y'know, odds and ends for things to stock the cabinet and pantry with, stuff that can be additions to the food you've already purchased elsewhere.

For actual food, I don't think so. Shyt, I wouldn't spend more than $20-25 in Dollar Tree as I feel like while it's a bargain, it's also a waste of money due to the sizing and smaller packages.

I shop at Dollar Tree whenever I wanna stock up on goodies such as snacks, drinks, candy, and some frozen items (burritos, chimichangas, etc) I wouldn't do any serious grocery shopping there but I understand that some people times is hard and they need that $70 or less to stretch for at least a week.

I got this far comparing this to walmart before I got bored.

Edit: I left out the rib eye steak because they sell those for $1 and there is no Walmart equiv because those things are trash even by wal marts standards, but if someone insist.

Steak umm - 4.94
Total as of the boxes of Penne they added. Ignore spelling, grammar, and formatting, I was typing this on the fly. :birdman:

38.07 - f would be less if I decided to use the great value version of these. I tried to stick to matching name brands, but if it looked generic, I just used great value.

Crispy Battered Fish - 6.86
Broccoli - 0.94
Shrimp - 4.68
Frozen blueberries - 2.86
cheese singles - 2.48
jello 2x(1.78) - 3.56
fruit snack(1 box 22 count) - 5.27

The milk was kind of difficult because walmart doesn't really sell 1 quart size milk.
1/2 gal Milk - 1.47
1/2- gal Almond mil - 2.63
1/2 gal Oat milk - 3.68
Jasmine rice 2 lb - 3.28
1 Asparagus 16 fl oz - 5.86
starkist tuna(1.14) x4 - 4.56
Del monte green beans x4 - 5.92
penne 2x -1.84
