I am serious. It is very much the trend in TLR.
People can be mixed as all hell, but if the African ancestory isn't praised above all, there is a problem, self hate, etc.

In America we see race. Us vs them. Color vs Color. Around the world they are far more about culture and Nationalism.

Black Americans are people without a country, as in a lot of what America stands for happened to be born out of our suffering. It is ingrained in us

to see things one way. However, countryless brethren who only think about racism can't possibly fathom how nationalism >>>>>> to most of the world.

We can't put our lens in their glasses. The prescriptions are wrong. But hey I guess we have all the answers, right?

I agree. I find myself struggling with that from time to time. Going by just "black" over "dark skin dominican" or vice versa doesn't make the struggle any easier to me, anyway.

Folks need to think while they are throwing an umbrella over everybody, if war broke out, that "brotherly love" shyt would die
vs countrymen standing together. Sure there will be exceptions, but step over into another country and try to play nice with
people just because they look like you.

This labeling and colorism is a uniquely American issue. Sharing distant ancestry and some physical features doesn't mean
they will see you any different from a Serbian or Irishman. And it wouldn't be racist for them to do so. It is just how their culture functions.

Way to deflect. Sammy Sosa bleached his skin because coming up, he was treated like trash as a black man. How am I applying anything from America to my argument when I just told you there are a plethora of investigative reports and articles detailing the poor treatment of black dominicans?

“Disturbing references are made to blacks as being ‘pig feed,’ ignorant or unhygienic, and many spoke of their daily experiences of racism, including by administrative officials in registration offices, on public transport and elsewhere,” they stated.

Breh, I hear you, but the tone of this thread started and will probably end strictly with self-hate. This plays a part, but there
were tensions between the countries that supersede skin tone. Our constantly thoughts about race doesn't mean that is
how they think about it, it is only a part of a history of aggression.

They can admit to the African ancestry. Fine. But if they went to Africa, they would immediately find themselves the odd
man out. Sharing ancestry only goes so far. They are an entirely different culture and happen to share bloodlines. The only
reason we as black americans think this way is because of how we are treated in America. They have a different problem
that isn't simply defined as "hating themselves."

But what those self-hating blacks do not understand is that by claiming Dominican but not claiming black, they're acquiescing to white supremacy.

The root of the DR/Haiti beef is that Haitians came through and stomped the buildings of Hispaniola and drove the Spanish out in the process. Self-hating Dominicans would rather see themselves as Spanish (read: white) than ever admit they're black and view Spain--not Africa--as the motherland despite the fact that 70-80% of their ancestry comes from Africa.

Cultural identity is a red herring.

u right breh but the question is never "do u admit to having african ancestry?" to which any dominican with half a brain would give u a yes. the question in this country is always "are u black?" which is not as simple because in this country black means african american. by the same token, im a light skinned dominican with green eyes. if u ask me "are u white?" i will give u a very emphatic no.

dude asked me before if i identify more with black or white and i could not even answer that because in my mind black is AA and white is european or american redneck cac white. i only identify as mixed or biracial because ya twist my arm but i have a hard time seeing myself as anything but dominican because all i know is dominican culture. at the same time, i recognize all aspects of my culture and where everything is from. i recognize that our merengue music is african influenced and so is our version of the spanish language and so is our food. im proud of all aspects that make up dominican culture no matter where they come from because at this point its just dominican to me.

i never said DR was free of white supremacy. what i said to u is that just because im a light skinned dominican does not mean i had any chance of making it in DR if my parents had stayed there anymore than my uncles who are all dark skinned. i would be in the same town working the same jobs as them.

but ill send an email to my little white cousins out there and tell them not to worry about their next meal because white supremacy is gonna come thru and save them any day now.
