That's not immigration policy, that's mismanagement of funds and constituent resources. He absolutely fukked the migrant response (They are NOT illegal) up by saddling the south side with them and finding all kinds of creative funding to do so. That put him terribly underwater.

The main reason he is unpopular though is he was a pie-in-the-sky progressive who came in making all kinds of promises when he had no solid political background. He comes in, wants to do a ton of shyt, but faces the reality that a bunch of Chicago's cash was coming from Covid funds. He has basically been in a stand-still not doing anything substantive since he came into office. Most of the migrants are gone and those who are left are either waiting to get booted via court order OR are on the streets. His main issue with black folks is that he hasn't delivered anything in the meantime and it seems like hes gonna run out the clock doing nothing. 2 years after the migrant crisis was at peak he has done nothing else. Thats the major issue with the black population.

Again, the migrants that are/were here in Chicago are/were here LEGALLY, sent by Texas, and its not free to send people back out. It was a rock and a hard place and Johnson chose all the wrong moves.

A politician that can’t land his own proposals and struggles to communicate is not a politician.

Even I understand that the “funding” wasn’t direct cash to migrants, but he didn’t nail the communication on that issue and thats his problem. Not to mention, he speaks like a black-identitarian from 2015 and it sounds tone-deaf to most people in 2025 INCLUDING black democrats. He’s aggressively ignorant and presents himself as an activist not as a wise and sage and responsible leader.

I told you why this man is underwater. He sold progressive ideas. Those ideas cost money and require expertise. He is not an experienced politician and Covid funds running out had him doing goofy shyt like chiding the Governor to get Chicago schools funded. When that money ran out, his time in office went from "We are going to do these things" to "shyt, now what do we do?" Hence nothing of note being done. If you are a standard politician doing the same old same old, its harder to nail when you aren't doing anything. If you promise all kinds of justice initiatives, affordable housing (something he does work on), and general budget fixing and 2 years in none of that seems to have been completed to any great degree, of course he's not doing well in the polls.

This is my problem with Mamdani. I’m not against him because I am not progressive. I’m against him because I know when he fails, he will tank the rest of the Democratic Party by association.
