Change the situation a bit. What if you saw a kid getting beat the hell down (beaten like a grown up) by their parent? You wouldn't step in because "how you can respect yourself dying over an ungrateful kid that aint even yours" ??

First of all lets analyze the situation. If a nikka is in public whopping his bytch's ass then that's not the first time he's done it. No nikka whoops his bytch's ass in front of everybody the first go round. He's gotten some jabs, hooks and slaps in on her in the privacy of their own home. She has the options to NOT be with him. A woman can choose her significant other but a child can't choose his parent. Not the same situation and I would be more liable to intervene against a kid than a woman.

Saw a woman get beat up out my window by some guy, and when a Good Samaritan tried to intervene she told him to mind his damn business. So I proceeded to watch her get beat up again before I went to bed.
