Won't play this until I finish the first two.
I feel you on that, but I gave it a whirl and... Well from what I've gathered you don't need to play this in that order if its about the story
And the gameplay is different in each game, I only briefly played the first one but this game is completely different gameplay wise
Its not supposed to be an evolution in its gameplay. IT was designed to be different (is what the devs are saying) so based off all that, I suggest you give it a try even if its just to see what all the huhbub is about :francis:

:gucci: doom 2016 and eternal were fire
meh, they're 'well made' but the gameplay loop is so fukking boring. No one is going to be mentioning doom eternal in 10 years, hell they don't even mention it now. Doom and subsequently quake were revolutionary games when they came out, as video games & programmatically with shyt like Quake's fast inverse square root. I feel like a lot of these types of franchises stop innovating and are just nostalgia bait. Same thing goes for Halo

People still talk about Doom Eternal 5 years later. If anything it's risen in profile since it's release.

As to The Dark Ages.

Pros in my opinion:

This is a completely different take than the last 2 games. I like the bigger focus on defense when it comes to the gameplay. It almost feels like punching and counter punching. But once you get the hang of it, you'll be a true one man army. Less focus on RPG elements more straight forward than the last 2 Dooms.

The things I didn't love were anything that didn't involve shooting. The could have shortened the dragon riding and they could have scrapped the giant demon fighting. Game at times does feel a little easy. The shield is maybe a step below broken. The approach to guns can be hit or miss, you can get by on maybe 2 or 3 guns.

I will say, programming wise, Doom Eternal's optimization is pretty remarkable. I'm not married to my opinions for sure. I may need to go give Eternal a retry.
