It was harder to be a star in Jays era so he wins even if you do believe this to be true.

And more importantly,i notice OP left out the streets:sas1:, in which Jay wins by a landslide.

Lemme guess the Op's response "bu bu but the streets don't matter:mjcry:"

Nope.

Jay was going 3 mill in an era when there was multiple super stars from every region vying for attention.

And no, I obviously don't expect Drake to go 3x mill in 2016....but the sole reason he's on top is because there isn't much to compete with him. To put it into perspective his closest peer is probably Kendrick and they don't even make the same kind of music. Musically a Drake album is closer to an Adele album than what Kendrick is doing.

Hell, never mind all that. We're still talking about Jay in 2016. Do you seriously believe Drake will be a factor 20 years from now? People always over rate the importance of a rapper in his prime. The same thing happened to 50 and Wayne.

Fred.
Drake has penetrated markets that Jay never did, even in his prime. And i disagree that it was harder to be a star then...or at least to go 1 to 3x platinum. No telling what Drake would have sold in the late 90s, early 2000s. Im talking strictly from a popularity stand point.

People lack both hindsight and foresight.

That's why sports is better (sometimes).

At least they wait until you're hovering around the same scoring mark before they start comparing people to each other.

Comparing a guy who's been around 6-7 years to a nikka who literally rapped on a major label album in 1989 and is still relevant today is beyond insane.

Just think about that the next time you wanna compare any rapper to Hov. 27 years. Jay was on Jaz-O's album 27 years ago and is still around.

He's right. Think about how much competition Jay had in '96. He had damn near the entire roster of who we consider legends, in their prime, to content with.

Brehs there's a common misconception that everyone was selling in the 90's. Because the people we consider legends sold millions of records.

There was dozens of rappers barely going gold. A few were going plat. Maybe a couple times 1x plat.

So it's easy to retroactively look at Jay going 3x plat and say "well, everyone was selling!". Everyone selling =/= the shyt that Jay, BONE, DMX, etc. was doing.

"Everyone selling" let DAS EFX go gold a couple times. "Everyone selling" ain't gonna make somebody go 3x plat. That was reserved for the cream of the crop.

Lastly, of course Drake has more markets than Jay. He makes pop music. If Jay was running around doing shyt like "Hotling Bling"....which ain't even rap....he'd have different markets, too.

:whoa: Jay transitioned into a pop rapper when he released Vol 2, breh. Drake is exactly what Jay Z wanted to be in the early 2000s. But back then, alienating the streets really fukked with ur sales and paper. Nowadays that shyt doesn't matter as much.

Alot of ppl dont realize JAY Z was NEVER big INTERNATIONALLY

He was always big in the STATES only.

DRAKE is INTERNATIONAL

Jay performing in a 20,000 seat arena in Germany, 17 years into his solo career:

Have no idea what you're talking about and start threads, brehs.

Yo @Brooklynzson can we implement some kind of IQ test before people sign up?

You can't compare what was considered going pop in '98 to what is considered going pop in 2016. People thought fukking "It Was Written" was a pop record in '96.
