Miguel could be added to the conversation but I wouldn't say he was the main force for redefining new Rnb. But I agree with what you said 100%.

I was thinking Miguel too because he's just as talented as the three and I consider them the "Big 3" of mainstream R&B in this era but like you said, he didn't shift the genre with his sound, although he uniquely added his own touch to modern R&B.

The Weeknd and his low life, synth heavy, sample based ambient "dark" moody sound defined an era from 2011 to onward.

You can't listen to any new R&B track or artist and not here elements of what the Weeknd added to the game. Even to the lyrics and the content he changed. He made it cool for an artist be fukked up on drugs, drowning in their own fear and insecurity and letting the music show that. Although R.Kelly and the Dream were pretty explicit in their lyrics before Weeknd, Abel really took some of the raunchiness to a new level. I didn't mind this at first because it was a new side of R&B that was more raw, I personally don't like it now. Even listening to Teyana Taylor new album... every song is an explicit sex track and this didn't exist before from female artist. They all still sang about sex but the lyrics weren't so in your face and it had a subtlety to it... the Weeknd ripped that away and ushered in that new level of fukkery in his lyrics

So basically a whole article crediting Drake with the wave 808's and Heartbreaks started :stopitslime:

Missed the point. There's no Take Care before 808's made it possible :yeshrug:

808s made Drake possible, and is a classic IMO. But then Drake took it a step further. This article does a solid job of explaining how/why. Never really thought about it like that, but they are kind of right :manny:

Yeah I agree. And since you mentioned The Weeknd I always wanted to hear him over this have one of his producers remix it a bit though tbh.

and if thats the case, then you credit Andre 3000.

How far back yall gonna go with this shyt?

Beethoven?

To be honest — that subdued, minimalist approach to singing that they’re trying to credit Drake for...Aaliyah started.

That’s why she is his biggest musical influence.

I’m sleep, doe

I guess you could credit him with the whole infatuation with the 90's R&B sound in terms of flipping 90's records into something new. He ain't the first, but was one of the first on that wave and the biggest artist doing so.

Also, some of Usher's Looking For Myself, Jamie Foxx's "Fall For Your Type", Melanie Fiona's "4 AM" and others come to mind. They all have that Drake/40 sound and a few of them were produced/written by Drake and 40.
