Here's Why American Teens Have Stopped Working Summer Jobs

The rise of low-skill immigration in recent decades, combined with other factors, has reduced the ability of teenagers to get summer jobs, according to the Atlantic.

"In the summer of 1978, 60 percent of teens were working or looking for work," the Atlantic‘s Derek Thompson recently wrote. "Last summer, just 35 percent were."

One reason why teens work less today is that immigrants fill more jobs, such as restaurant servers and retail salespeople, while experienced American workers also compete for these positions.

"The rise of low-skill immigration in the last few decades has created more competition for exactly the sort of jobs that teenagers used to do, like grocery-store cashiers, restaurant servers, and retail salespeople," the Atlantic reported. "Many of the jobs that teenagers used to do no longer exist; they've gone to older Americans and new immigrants."

Increased minimum wage has also reduced the likelihood that companies will employ inexperienced seasonal workers, while teenagers' focus on summer classes has contributed to the downturn in their workforce participation.

Federal Reserve statistical analyses have also linked the decrease in American teenage workers to increased immigration.

A 2012 research abstract by a member of the Federal Reserve's board of governors stated that "the increase in the population of less educated immigrants has had a considerably more negative effect on employment outcomes for native youth than for native adults."

Ben Steverman of Bloomberg has pointed out the benefits of summer work for young people, which used to be a more common part of growing up.

"A summer job can help teenagers grow up as it expands their experience beyond school and home," Steverman wrote. "Working teens learn how to manage money, deal with bosses, and get along with co-workers of all ages."

  1. They note increased immigration...not increased illegal immigration. Obviously a larger pool of workers means tighter job market if the number of available jobs remains stagnant or decreases.
  2. Most summer jobs for teens are of the retail variety. In case no one has noticed, these retail jobs have steadily declined due to the emergence e-commerce. Again, creating a tighter market for summer jobs.
  3. If hiring of illegal immigrants is contributing to this problem, go after the companies that hire illegals with stiffer regulation, fines and penalties.

This is definitely PART of the reason why. Free Beacon is a right-wing news site so other details are being omitted purposely:

1. Higher number of students choosing to go to college summer schools
2. Older Americans choosing to stay in the work force longer, working jobs the teens can work
3. Decrease in federal funded summer youth jobs/programs
4. Companies wanting to hire teens and not pay them anything (increase in unpaid internships over the last decade)
5. Cultural stigma of working certain jobs discourages teens

Bingo. Democrats can approach the issue with undocumented immigration by forcing businesses to chase after, and hire American born workers first, having to meet a quota of legal citizens before touching undocumented immigrants. Trump has made it cool to stomp businesses trying to take advantage of the free market.

This is a really good point. The article fails to factor in the effect of increased automation and e-commerce, as well as changing shopping habits of consumers. E-commerce has absolutely EXPLODED within the past 10 years, and you'd have to be willfully ignorant to overlook that in favor of looking at immigrants being the problem. :dahell:

Even some fast food places are introducing automation in their restaurants, requiring fewer workers.

I'm not sure if it's a matter of "supporting" immigrants taking menial summer jobs--I don't think anyone's "pushing" for it necessarily--it's just a fact of the workforce. :kanyebp:

The question is why society wants to push teens into low paying retail and food service jobs, when the economy has evolved to afford them much more lucrative opportunities (drop shipping, e-commerce, ride sharing programs like Uber, etc.)

:beli: no it hasnt. and if those jobs are so plentiful and lucrative then adults with responsibilities should be the priority for them, not teens

theres nothing wrong with teens working low paying retail and fast food jobs, because someone has to do them and all things considered they're the best demographic for them. frankly it would be ideal if those were mostly relegated to teens without families and responsibilties, and adults were taking those jobs you're talking about

and if you want an example of your first point, For years, immigration authorities gave this Arizona mother a pass. Now she has been deported.

how am i "supposed" to feel about this story?

I'm not really saying that teens shouldn't work in lower paying, menial labor jobs. Just that they have more opportunities than that now. My 16-year-old nephew could start a drop shipping business this summer if he wanted to. I couldn't do that when I was his age.

How you gonna ROFL with a hollow back?
LOL, worship capitalism and blame illegal immigrants for employers exploiting cheap labor, brehs.
Blame liberals for lazy white kids not wanting to enter the work force, brehs
Come into every thread with conservative talking points, with no suggestions or solutions, brehs

Let me try this
"Both sides are the same, I don't like Trump......liberals suck, this is because of minimum wage increases, Benghazi, Obama is a terrorist.......if you think any politicians have your best interest in mind, you are wrong.......Rand the Gawd :blessed:"
I started working when I was 15, my daughter started working at 15, under the table, all her friends work, part time jobs, throughout the year. She has sports all year, and through the summer, but still works part time. I would also attribute this decline to a rise in volunteer work, community service, etc..with the technology nowadays, it is easier to find things to do, though I don't have anything to cite.
