Ok, to start, I am not a musician. I have a couple Gibson guitars that I fukk around with (trying to teach myself enough to play punk) ... but I'm under no illusion that I'll ever be better than really, really bad.

My son, on the other hand, has some chops. He plays guitar and writes lyrics (mostly standard pop/rock stuff ... but I think he has tried to write raps also).

So, I'm looking to get him a drum machine (or some software that would serve the same purpose). My primary priority is for him to be able to loop drum (maybe bass) accompaniment for his songs ... but, if he wants to screw around and try making beats, I'd be happy to hear that, too.

Any recommendations as to what to buy? I've been looking at the entry-level Korg Volca series, and the entry-level Akai drum machines. i have no idea if there's decent software out there for him to create drum tracks/loops.

I don't really want to invest too much to start. But, I'd also rather he create his own drum tracks, as opposed to just downloading loops from garage band or whatever.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any advice. And I'll dap or rep or whatever, if that sort of thing matters.

and, of course, if I'm totally in the wrong place for this question ... ignore, neg, or whatever people do.

What sound is he looking for? Like green day type music?

The stuff he writes is more heavy pop, from a guitar standpoint. 4 chords or so, repetitive with a rhythm. He's learning more songwriting techniques in his guitar lessons.
He plays Pearl Jam, Urge Overkill, Black Keys, Helmet and other stuff (I get a lot of chances to help decide what songs he'll learn).

I don't think green day would be too far off of what he wants to do. Or material issue, or any other power pop group. But, he's 13. So, his tastes can change quickly (I fully expect him to get sick of me influencing what he plays).

Physical drum machine will sound dated and cheesy like something from the 80's.

Oh wow for $200 thats not bad at all

This is the one the guy that sells me guitars recommended. I was looking at the rhythm wolf and the alexis sr-18. But, as I mentioned, I don't have a clue. Will look into that native instruments software also. Thanks:salute:
