I don't know if its supported by actual science but I think the popular explanation is that when you're drunk you more likely to be relaxed and not being in a rigid position. So you move more with the crash than someone who is alert and may be in a physical position to cause more injury? Dunno. That is what I hear often.

Also in this case, the guy being in a truck probably helps a bit.
