People don't talk about how lucky the Spurs were for drafting Duncan due to David Robinson's previous injury.. That 96-97 tanking losing season helped the Spurs like a motherfukker because the Spurs were already a 500 team when David Robinson was healthy.

It's talked about far more than the Rockets getting Ralph Sampson and Dream in back to back drafts.

If I had to pick a center [for an all-time best team], I would take Olajuwon. That leaves out Shaq, Patrick Ewing. It leaves out Wilt Chamberlain. It leaves out a lot of people. And the reason I would take Olajuwon is very simple: he is so versatile because of what he can give you from that position. It's not just his scoring, not just his rebounding or not just his blocked shots. People don't realize he was in the top seven in steals. He always made great decisions on the court. For all facets of the game, I have to give it to him.
Michael Jordan[51]
I still think you cant go wrong with either one :manny:

The gap between Robinson and Hakeem is definitely closer than the gap between Hakeem and Duncan

Hakeem is the posers go to player to romanticize. He lost in the first rd of the west like five years in a row until the Elie's maxwells horrys thorpes and smiths joined or came of age.
But you make it seem like its dreams fault that he had a weak supporting cast.

What about Samson and his love for that nose powder and how it blew the team up?

Olajuwon, for the simple fact that he did EVERYTHING better than Duncan, and was a more versatile defender. I'm not rewarding Duncan for being drafted to a better run franchise.

Dream is the better player of the two.

You're getting Sampson mixed up with Lewis Lloyd and Mitchell Wiggins. Sampson didn't have any drug problems.

This is an underrated aspect of Duncan. If he was selfish and insecure like Kobe and Shaq then there is no way the Spurs could have kept this thing going like they have. People try to hold his teammates against him as if he hasn't played a huge role in them getting to the level they did.

Duncan allowed others to shine credit to him. Dream never had an opportunity for that. But nonetheless point for duncan

That said they have always been my 1 and 2 in terms of modern bigs and I have always but Dream first. But what Duncan has done in the twilight of his career can't be denied. Beyond that, if we take the nostalgia glasses off was Dream's peak really that much greater than Duncan's? :ld:. I gotta say it's Duncan. He came close enough to Dream at his peak and he blows him out of the water in terms of longevity.

You have to say peak dream >>>> peak duncan

I'll concede that longevity duncan >>> longevity dream (there were factors determining that but it's fine)

But you can't sit here and really list anything duncan definitely did better than dream in their respective primes.

Scoring - Dream
Defense - Dream
Rebounding - Push/Wash
Offensive Game - Dream
Defensive Versatility - Dream (he could guard 3-5, and even stay with guards on the perimeter)
Leadership - I guess you can say Duncan here, since dream was a wildman before he found religion
