he could be right
Folks who grew up with MJ and saw him play are still running things for the most part
when 24 hour microscope of Lebron is finally gone and he just a name on Basketball Reference hes going to be the only dude with 40K points, 10K rebounds and 10K assists along with all the other accolades
There will be plenty of HD footage of Lebron's greatest moments while most of MJ's is grainy SD footage
No one is going to care about 2011 because failures of other GOATs are never brought up and there's going to be 15 years of data after 2011 that will make it an afterthought

there's no list that anyone recognizes with Wilt or Russell as the GOAT NOW
Of course they were brought up in the 90s but no current list has them as number 1 which is what Wade is saying with MJ

Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
:hhh:What a retard, this is why i hate today's debates.

Sports fans love a good GOAT debate, pointless as it is. Different people have different criteria, and ultimately it usually comes down to the player with which you most closely identify.

If you grew up in the Michael Jordan era, he's your GOAT. You'll claim the game was tougher back then and Jordan would score 50 a game under today's rules.

If you're of a younger generation, LeBron James is probably your GOAT. You'll claim the athletes LeBron is playing against are better and he's more versatile and physically gifted.

But what about that dude that is, you know, the NBA's all-time leading scorer? That guy with six championships and six MVPs and one of the most iconic shots in history? What's his name again?

Oh, yeah. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

You don't hear his name much anymore in these debates, if at all.

Dwyane Wade doesn't think that's coincidental. Again, it's a generational thing. Fans who grew up watching Kareem dominate are no longer controlling the conversation. A lot of them aren't even alive anymore, if we're being honest. And the ones who are, their voices have been as fazed out as the very style of game that allowed for Kareem's dominance in the first place.

Wade believes that in time, Jordan's once seemingly unassailable GOAT status, to this generation, will not only take a similar fall, but ultimately become irrelevant in the minds of the next wave of fans.

"We're not gonna be the ones having a conversation about the GOATs," Wade said of his generation of basketball players and fans that grew up with Jordan on a recent episode of the "Armchair Expert" podcast with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman. "Now it's going to be the younger, younger, younger generation. And they're gonna forget about Jordan like we forget about Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar]."

Wade acknowledged that Jordan was the "the first icon in basketball" in terms of his global appeal and reach and fame even outside the game, which will make him difficult to supplant, but in the same breath he acknowledged how much better the players of today are than even when he played, let along when Jordan was in his prime.

"I watch players play today and, like, I thought I was good … [but] they're way better than me," Wade said. "...The game continues to keep moving forward, and so we're going to continue to see things we've never seen before. And the eyes are gonna get younger and younger."

Wade is absolutely right about this. Everything and everyone eventually moves forward. The GOAT debates are fun, but they ultimately come down to the athlete to whom you most closely identify. What makes the Jordan vs. LeBron debate so fun right now is there are still a lot of people from both generations having the conversation. That will faze out, and eventually there will be a lot more LeBron campers. And eventually, someone will make a new generation of kids forget about LeBron.

Philly bouls, Trust the Process
Likely at some point. Just kinda the nature of things. In 60 years look how many people now discount Russell and Wilt from the convo. It's not like they're totally irrelevant, but it's only natural that he may no longer be the definitive choice. Odds are, someone in the next 60 years would "objectively" surpass him anyway

I haven't heard anyone say Wilt is #1 in a long time mainly because of the 2 championships but his numbers put him high on lists anyway
GOAT conversations in the last few years have been about MJ vs Bron and pick your favorite 3 player to round out the top 5 if you like
There is not one NBA expert in the ether right NOW that has Wilt as the GOAT
Folks still alive like Bob Ryan that would have Russell and Wilt there are dying off and even he has Lebron top 3 I believe
Wilbon says has Lebron as #2 and Wilt behind Kobe
Isiah has Lebron and Kareem
Even Bill Simmons put Lebron over Russell as #2 with MJ #1
What Wade is saying there are going to be less and less defenders of MJ as the years go by because the first hand accounts won't be there

Dudes on here are nutty with basketball discourse. Do cats really think that in, say, 1970, heads of the time imagined a day when Russell and Wilt weren't spoken of with regularity? But that's exactly what has happened, those guys are not regularly spoken of anymore, and when they are talked about they are often given demerits for the era in which they dominated...

nikkas really think a time won't come where heads won't look back and say, "well he did it in the 90s, one of the weakest eras competitively, so it's not like he did it in the era ___, ____, and ____ are currently dominating." shyt nikkas are saying that NOW and have been for a few years, 20 years from now the era that Mike did all his winning in is gonna look like the 60s to the people talking about it then...

As long as the NBA exists, they'll keep his name alive but for most heads, the appeal to shoo-in Mike will fade with time...

He had a 1 of 1 career that can't be matched because the collective advancement of the game and its players won't allow for it ever again. Mike's athleticism was unique for his time but much more regular today, just 20 years later. His defense would be much, much more criticized today, as would other aspects of his game and personal life. He'd still be an All-Time great in any era, but the mystique that was allowed to form and shape the narratives of his career don't exist today...

These dudes bugging but of course Mike Stans are the worst of all sports stans, you can't say Mike would lose a game of checkers without nikkas losing they shyt, so of course they believe the light he's existed in most of their lives will prevail forever. I'm sure Wilt and Russell Stans thought the same thing too...

To be fair, its difficult for most people to even visualize a world 1-2 years from now. Let a lone a world where they are long gone. Let alone a world where their favorite player isnt regarded as highly.

:francis:but yeah There will be a time where he wont be considered the consensus top dog. MJ will ALWAYS be MJ no matter what just like Babe Ruth will always be Babe Ruth. He will always win the popularity contest even long after he's gone. But whether people want to admit it or not theres going to be a time where putting others above him will be a normal thing. That goes for any athlete in any sport in the world (except hockey of course).

I was there. I saw the Isiah and Magic clip live on NBC when they said it. But its not true that there are not people saying Lebron is the GOAT now including the guy who said MJ was the GOAT back then. What's the difference?
