E3 was a tradeshow where publishers would show their games to the press and retailers. a big part of it was securing orders with retailers. it's not really needed now that there's only a handful of major retailers, and it's so easy to just show games online. now it's basically become more of a "direct-2-consumer" thing, because that is really what the gaming business is becoming
