Stakes. I keep trying to pin down the one thing that really bugs me about Destiny, the one thing it's really lacking, and ultimately it all comes down to stakes. What I mean, basically, is that there are none.

Five or six hours in, and I'm finding Destiny really fun. It's a slick-looking shooter that marries the best parts of a lot of existing franchises into something quite unlike them. It feels most like Halo in terms of movement and gunplay. Which makes sense, given that it supposedly runs on a modified Halo: Reach engine and basically amounts to the massively multiplayer Halo game Bungie always wanted to play.

Because of the unusual way Destiny has been released (the press have been given just a few hours headstart over everyone else), and because of its huge size, Jeremy and Jaz are going to write this review in pieces, recording their thoughts and impressions as they play through the game.

Destiny ticks all the right boxes for me. It has everything I could want from of an MMO-shooter: rich, compelling, and sometimes gorgeous environments, an open mission structure, and interesting gear to experiment with. However, I don't really feel immersed in it. Playing feels more of an exercise than an exciting new adventure in a brave new world. Despite being forced to watch the cutscenes, the story goes in one ear and out the other. It feels generic at best, and incomprehensible at worst. So I just follow the dot, shooting anything that stands between me and wherever I need to go to press the square button so Peter Dinklage can mutter something unintelligible to me.

I thought I'd post a quick update, as I'm still working on my main piece that I'll post on Wednesday.

Another quick update based on my overnight play. I've played a lot of PvP, and I'll be writing about that later. I also went through a few more missions, and I'm finding that quite a few of the end-of-mission fights feel overly protracted. Basically, it's all about surviving waves and waves of enemies and then taking out a boss. So far there doesn't seem to be much variety, and the behavioral modeling doesn't really change much. The challenge is essentially surviving an initial bumrush as mobs try to overpower you with numbers, and then settling into a protracted firefight where you use cover and try to get your shots in when you can. You're putting way too much stake in Halo:MCC
Am I though...

Everyone knows Halo is going to sell, because it's 3 classic games in one with updated multiplayer, updated maps, and updated graphics on the next gen...

TLOU: was just released on PS3 yesterday, but PS4 Stanley's didn't put to much stake into it, no?:usure:

As a big Halo fan, I can't say that I'm impressed. i'm very disappointed. One is that it isn't an exclusive so now it's like Bungie betrayed the fans that made them who they were.

This game isn't Halo and even though it's not Halo, it should've been Halo because Bungie made it. Why bother making a game like Halo that isn't like halo??

I think I'll sell my Xbox soon because what's the point in having a console that has two of the same games from the same devs on it that are the same but are different enough?? Halo and Destiny are basically different games by are twins..

:dwillhuh: So your issue isn't the game, but the fact that it isn't an xbox exclusive:why:

TLOU made sense because a lot of PS4 owners are people who didn't have PS3s.

I'm not knocking Halo:MCC at all. I'm sure it'll be a great deal value. I'm just not sold on it selling consoles and making Destiny irrelevant

Man.... reading those reviews truly was pathetic

...most of the gripes in those reviews are :mindblown:

One dude gave it a 0 because he couldn't talk to anybody :mindblown:

Set up a fireteam idiot :mindblown:

I keep hearing overrated as a main complaint :mindblown:

By WHOOO??!??? It's got a 6.2 lmao

Mad about no offline mode in a game where half the levels are made for 3 player co op ? :mindblown:

Damn reading through that was infuriating. This generation is so ADHD. Nobody likes ANYTHING.

:patrice:
Yeah, that's wild.
I'm not sure how people were duped by this game or where some of those complaints come from.
I didn't purchase Destiny because I'm not into FPS and it was centered around co-op game play.
I know I'm more of a lone wolf when it comes to gaming.
Buying this wouldn't have made sense for me in the long run, so I passed.
You can pretty much infer all of that from the beta.
Dudes get so caught up in the hype of things they don't take the time to actually think these purchases through.

A lot of PS4 owners are people who don't have PS3's? Riiiight...

Everyone I know who has a PS4 bought it specifically because it was cheaper and they're Sony Stan's

And I'm not saying HaloMCC will sell consoles. I'm betting that everyone who has a XB1 will be on that, and everyone who is a fan of the Halo series might cop an XB1 for it if they were on the fence before

I have a 360 but I no longer have the original Halo games and haven't played 4 in forever... But it's still fun. Playing on a Next gen system... I probably won't even pick up my 360 again after GTA drops. There would be no point

And I'm also saying that it sounds like people who are familiar with Bungie aren't impressed. The game DID look a lil too Halo-ish for me... Like I was expecting something new since they dipped on Halo and XB exclusiveness

But my PS4 supposedly arrives tomorrow. So then I'll see watsup

Reviews:

NZ Gamer - 7/10:
"Destiny isn’t a bad game, by any means. If you like sci-fi shooters, you’ll get a good 20 hours of enjoyment out of this. But that’s really all it is; a fun, forgettable shooter that plays it safe and sticks to what’s been proven, with nothing to really set it apart from it’s peers. But maybe that’s for the best, because Destiny’s one area of attempted innovation - it’s hyped up social elements, persistent world, and multiplayer gameplay, are it’s biggest failing."

IB Times - 8/10:
"Overall: 8/10 – Ambitious, polished and clearly pored over by hundreds of people, Destiny is an incredible creative undertaking. It doesn't all click, but it's a huge achievement."

Cheat code central - 4.5/5:
"Destiny, simply put, might just be the game of year [sic], but definitely makes you want to join the next generation."

NZ Herald - 4.5/5: (warning: apparently the author only played 6 missions?)
"Yep, this feels like a game that feels like it deserves to be played to the very end - wherever and whenever that may be. Bring on the claw hands because I'm planning on seeing this one through. Yes, it's my destiny."

Pie - 7.4/10:
"Overall, and from an early impression, Destiny is a good game, maybe even great, but it’s by no means a new Halo. It’s worth the purchase, because it really does have moments of certified brilliance that you simply need to experience first-hand."

Hobby Consolas (Spanish) - 94/100

Gamer Headlines - 9/10:
"Destiny has already been hailed as the most successful new franchise launched in Activation’s history, and even with some minor blemishes this is truly the game to own this year."
Pretty good.
