Taiwan is important because with a naval base in Taiwan you have access to the entire pacific. The only way to defeat the US Navy is through submarine warfare, as you can interdict supply lines and attack deep into enemy territory. Right now the US has the edge in submarines and with naval bases throughout the pacific can operate submarines everywhere. The South China Sea is not deep enough to operate submarines reliably and safely.

Chips and Chinese blood and soil rhetoric had always been secondary to Taiwans importance as a naval outpost.

Right now the US in the event of a conflict has China in a check mate. Same as it had Japan behind the 8 ball in WW2 and why Japan had to seize Singapore, Philippines and Wake island immediately.

Yeah the second part. The US doesn’t need Taiwan as a military base because we have the Philippines, Korea, Japan and numerous pacific islands already. China needs Taiwan for that reason. It’s the easiest target.

If China was to ever conquer Taiwan they would immediately be able to rival the US in the pacific. It is the greatest fear of any military planner. That’s why it won’t be allowed to happen without conflict. Not chips, not because Taiwanese suddenly want to be associated with Beijing.
