Ra most definitely is the godfather of modern lyricism as far as showing the absolute highest level that could be achieved

But it’s really 3 acts that came to shape the modern lyrical style: Ra, Kane, and one nobody talks about EPMD. Technique, wordplay, and style. Big for example was basically the embodiment of all 3 of them at the same time (see Machine Gun Funk for example).

personally, i think krs-1 is the artist who really took hip-hop to another level as an artform, showing how the reality in the streets could be painted with articulacy on the mic.

he was the one who pioneered that pivot to a more artful and advanced use of wordplay.

Def influenced more where rap was heading for the next set of rappers... I think I can agree

Nas is Rakim (and G Rap’s) son for sure…but I always attributed Big and Jay as descendants of Kane…mainly because of some kind of lyrical style family style I’ve made up in my head which extended down to Wayne (Kane>Wayne) and Lupe (Rakim>Nas) in the early aughts…and Drake and Kendrick in the early 2010’s….which admittedly is probably a creation of my own imagination and won’t hold up to too much scrutiny, especially since rappers have multiple influences
