It’s his fault for being an idiot. DEA made a deal with you where you can sell your drugs and sell out a few drug kingpin and tip on drugs shipment every now and then. But you thought you could challenge Uncle Sam and come out clean 
Nah, it's really just a way to ensure he dies in prison. I'm no lawyer but some people can have a life sentence pardoned after a certain amount of time. Adding 30 years is to ensure even if El Chapo is able to get his life sentence reduced, he still has to serve the 30 years afterwards.
Another El Chapo will just rise up so

Idk man. This all seems a little too excessive...12 gun towers. I guess the prison is less for the prisoners and more for the people on the outside that want to break out the prisoners. I guess it's also a power play...a show of brute force from the US government.

Yep. Some years back some dude got a life sentence + 150 years. Judge essentially was telling him you will die in prison. Crazy.
