Dictators generally don't leave because of fear of the consequences once they're out of power.
It's less that they're irrational or drunk with power, and more that they know that through their rise to power they've done so much wrong to so many people that they (and everyone that's ever been close to them or benefited from their rule) is liable to get killed by hundreds of different families, political groups, etc. if they're ever on this earth without a standing army and secret police.
