Electric Circus was unfairly hated on

It'd been a minute since I listened to it until this morning but Com, Dilla, ?uest, Posyer put in some great work on this album

Production is incredible, even on songs where Com's rapping doesn't coincide with the beats ("I Got A Right Ta" and "Electric Wire Hustle Fire")

I remember when i bought the album back in 02' and was like, "WTF is everybody hating on?!". This is nice. You could see the evolution from LWFC to EC, in both rhymes + beats.

Listening to this album and Com was light years ahead of the game with this shyt. If this album was released today, it'd be received a thousand times better.

Album had everybody on it: Vinjia Mojica, Marie Daulne, Bilal, Omar, MJB, Ceelo, Jill Scott, Badu, and Laetitia Sadier

I always enjoyed that album. I really don't understand the hate for it. It was a creative and innovative project. His worst albums to me are Universal Mind Control and Nobody Smiling. Besides that Common has a legendary catalog. He's in my top 5.

Album always felt like the city limits of Neo Soul to me.

20 years ahead of its time. Mick Jenkins, Saba, Noname all doing this type of "weirdo" rap poetry fusion.

I get that it's not what we wanted from Com at the time and Be was fantastic, but this album was unfairly hated on and discouraged this sound from existing for a while IMO

This is one of the best beats and Bilal did his thing on the hook!

It was a great album when it came out but I think Commons core fans was not trying to hear him on these type beats. Also the critics dumped on it unfairly which made non hardcore Common fans just dismiss it altogether. I loved it from jump. And then Dre came out with the Love Below like 8 months later and was hailed by the fans and critics alike for doing something similar.

So funny this was just brought up. I was riding around playing Like Water For Chocolate just a few hours ago. After playing my joints I’m like I haven’t gave Electric Circus a spin in a long time. Skimmed through and immediately hit the and turned that shxt back off. Every good artists gets a “experimental pass” from me so I’m good. Common has multiple classics.

I definitely agree with that. That's my only issue with hip-hop purists. They never want their artists to expand their sound. I too like traditional hip-hop when it comes to my favorite artist. Because they can get in a comfortable pocket. But I appreciate the creativity when trying something different. I may or may not like it but I appreciate the effort.
