I also don't think Nas "took it to another level", I never bought that, he doesn't do what Rakim did better than Rakim, at all, he does different shyt, Nas isn't the 2nd coming of Rakim, he's the 1st coming of Nas. They are different artists, despite Nas being very much inspired by Ra.

At their apex nas was better but rakim has retained more of his skill set and has a much better discography. If we are talking about from the beginning of their career till now then rakim obviously gets the nod.

This is a conversation about which era of hip hop was more impactful

1994 - 2001 era will obviously win over the 1986 -1991 in a demographic thats 16-25+

Even tho Ether was a big moment in hip hop I cant say that NaS has ever had a summer that was bigger than Rakim in '88

That being said I voted NaS because he surpassed Rakim level when he dropped Ether and the music he relased after that.

Rakim needed I aint no joke to say Kane's name and just end it.

if he had done that plus maybe add in Marley Marl and Kool G Rap ..and won. He would be greatest ever.

Exactly. And Rakim basically only had like a 7 yr career

nas wouldnt have lasted 7 years in rakim's day.

rap was different and in a better place back then.

you couldnt drop half-ass records and stay afloat back then. chit was more organic.

but Rakim didn't last in Nas's era

nas last album sold 150,000 which is amazing since he didn't have any songs on the radio and he has been in the game for a long ass time.

Rakim's The Seventh Seal album tho........

rakim was 4 or 5 albums deep before nas era even began. of course he didnt last in nas' era. he was old school before it even started.

i dont care how much nas last album sold. hip-hop been over. i dont think youre fully comprehending my posts.

Anyone born in the mid to late 80s and later would choose Nas

70s babies and older would choose Ra

Nas is Neo in the matrix status to me so I'd choose him over anyone even Pac (who is right behind him in my all time list)

:manny:

i was born in the mid-80s.

i think you should say "anyone who didnt get into hip-hop until the mid-late '90s or later".

Rakim came back after a 5 year hiatus(brought on by Eric B and MCA) and went Gold.

Also Rakim still has his soul intact...not quite sure I can say the same for Nas...

I hope he eventually got his back after this

The Seventh Seal >>>>>>>> Life Is Good to me.

I loved that album, criminally underrated, many of the joints were epic classics.
