It’s the same reason that these poor ass hillbillies in West Va, they vote against their best interests again and again because 1. They need to feel someone is less than them, so they choose black people/racism as a security blanket, and racist conservatives as well as corporate/centrist Dems feed their hatred/racism. 2. They are the temporarily embarrassed billionaires that worship capitalism even though it has literally killed hundreds of thousands of those same West Virginians, and they listen to the Elon Musks and Donald Trumps of the world who think what Bill Gates does is stupid because he actually wants to change the world for the better. Elon looks for the “problem” that is a hot topic in the news cycle, calculating the PR he can get, then bulls in, makes it worse, waits for the problem to get resolved, and applies 75%+ of the credit to himself. At one point he had a very superficial public persona that was pretty much limited to starting successful companies that made tech breakthroughs, pushing for sustainability, and trying to act like the "cool kid" in the room. People latch onto anyone successful and the huge degree of his success plus the fact that he embraced it gave him a large stan base.
A lot of shyt that people hate him for now, wasn't part of his public persona back then. Either people didn't know about it or in some cases he straight up wasn't doing it. Musk is the one who changed, not his fans.
His image was a bootstraps "I did this myself" guy and people didn't know that he came from South African mining wealth.
His image was as a modern post-racist white guy and people didn't know that he has suspect racial views and his black employees got treated like shyt.
His image was as a reasonable independent thinker and people didn't know he was going to make a hard turn to the alt-right.
His image was as a pro-government, pro-interventions guy and Tesla survived for years solely off of government subsidies for electric, so he looked like a total ass when he started opposing subsidies for everyone else, dodging taxes, bytching about government interference, etc.

Maybe you just started paying attention to him but he’s always been hated. Most people in finance shyt on Tesla for years due to all the issues and lack of profits. So many people literally betting on him to fail is partly why it rose to the level it did in the first place.
