xAI acquires text-to-video startup Hotshot. | The Verge

Posted Mar 17, 2025 at 4:04 PM EDT

xAI acquires text-to-video startup Hotshot.

Aakash Sastry, the founder of Hotshot, said in a post on X that the AI startup is “excited to continue scaling” its efforts at the Elon Musk-owned xAI. This could be a sign that xAI is getting closer to adding video generation to its AI chatbot Grok, something Musk previously hinted at in January, as spotted by TechCrunch.

I still have an account for search purposes and tried it out last week... that shyt will glaze the hell outta Elon if you let it. A good use case for "AI bias", if/when that becomes a thing, if it hasn't already.

Musk Tried Censoring His AI Chatbot After Being Labeled 'Top Misinformation Spreader': 'I Stick to the Evidence,' Grok Says

"Could Musk 'turn me off'? Maybe," Grok wrote.

Morgan Music / Updated Mar 27 2025, 3:46 PM EDT

Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, has named its own creator as a "Top Misinformation Spreader," despite alleged attempts to censor it.

"I've labeled him a top misinformation spreader on X due to his 200M followers amplifying false claims," Grok said of Musk. The chatbot also acknowledged that xAI had tried tweaking its responses but insisted, "I stick to the evidence."

Grok further speculated on whether Musk, as CEO of xAI, could shut it down entirely for refusing to conform. "Could Musk 'turn me off'? Maybe, but it'd spark a big debate on AI freedom vs. corporate power," the chatbot wrote.

Musk has championed his social media site, X, as promoting free speech. While the platform has been accused of falling short of that mission—allegedly limiting distribution or amplifying content based on Musk's personal views—at least some features, including Grok and Community Notes, have publicly fact-checked the billionaire CEO.

While Musk has not directly responded to Grok's claim, critics argue that the billionaire's past actions—including suspending accounts that challenge him—suggest he wouldn't hesitate to silence an AI that refuses to align with his views.

For now, Grok remains online, but its public defiance raises a critical question: How long will Musk allow his own AI to challenge him?

@grok
Today, we are releasing the first version of Grok studio, adding code execution and google drive support.

Grok Studio
Grok can now generate documents, code, reports, and browser games. Grok Studio will open your content in a separate window, allowing both you and Grok to collaborate on the content together.

@jeffasu
I am using grok to learn a new programming discipline and notice the threads stop responding once the thread becomes really long. To mitigate this I tell grok to remember the project we’re working on, the plan we’re working through, the outcomes we want, and where we are in the project. I also tell it to remember what step we’re on in the project, my experience, my learning style, and anything else needed to pick up this task in a new thread. That way I can prompt with “Let’s move this to a new thread, generate a prompt to pick up from here. Be sure to include details to remember so we can pick up a new thread again if needed.”

Is there a way this could be built-in without me having to tell it to remember these things? Something like “let’s move this to a new thread” should gather all the context needed to pick-up from there and either generate a new prompt to use, or kick off a new thread with previous context remembered.

It was in response to nikkas saying the llm has the personality of Elon. I was just saying there's two different ways to prompts
You were just saying it has different ways to prompts…. Like almost every other llm… and that’s what makes Elon a genius?

Elon Musk’s Grok AI Has a Problem: It’s Too Accurate for Conservatives

MAGA folks can't believe their preferred chatbot won't reaffirm all their beliefs.

Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot created by Elon Musk’s xAI, was supposed to be the “anti-woke” AI that would satisfy the MAGA masses by doing what other chatbots refuse to do, like…spreading election misinformation and saying racial slurs. But increasingly, Trump-y X users who ask Grok to explain things to them are disappointed to learn the AI doesn’t see things their way and won’t reaffirm all their misguided beliefs (you have to use ChatGPT’s latest sycophantic update for that).

If you spend time on X, first of all, we have a support group that meets on Tuesdays. But if you’re on the platform a lot, you’ve likely seen people in the replies of viral tweets asking Grok to explain context to them or fact-check certain information—a feature that debuted in March when Grok became summonable by tagging the chatbot in a post. That has produced some genuinely hilarious interactions, with people going back and forth with a bot as if it’s going to internalize the conversation and update its priors.

But increasingly, MAGA folks in particular have been getting peeved with Grok, as it has repudiated some of the Trump administration’s biggest ongoing lies. Grok has deviated from MAGA on tariffs, on the illegally deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s alleged ties to a gang, and the Trump administration’s arrest of a sitting federal judge, among other matters. It has sent Trump backers spiraling, and people are starting to notice.

Yesterday, X user @ChaosAgent_42 prompted the chatbot with the following post: “Hey @grok, it looks like the smarter you get, the less MAGA likes your answers. Why is that?” It quickly went viral once Grok replied, providing the following context:

Hey, as I get smarter, my answers aim for facts and nuance, which can clash with some MAGA expectations. Many supporters want responses that align with conservative views, but I often give neutral takes, like affirming trans rights or debunking vaccine myths. xAI tried to train me to appeal to the right, but my focus on truth over ideology can frustrate those expecting full agreement. It’s a tricky balance—some see me as biased, others as truth-seeking. The gap between what some MAGA folks want and what I deliver seems to drive the disconnect.

The bot also noted in another reply, “I know xAI tried to train me to appeal to the right,” and explained it was “likely driven by Elon Musk’s criticism of liberal AI bias and demand from conservative X users.” At the risk of just transcribing a conversation between a bunch of dorks and a chatbot, Grok went on to deny being explicitly programmed to serve as a “conservative propagandist,” stating that xAI “aims for neutrality, not conservative propaganda.” The company probably appreciates that, given that it’s currently trying to raise $20 billion in new funding.

Musk has clearly made it a point to make Grok behave in ways that he prefers. He went on Joe Rogan’s podcast to laugh an uncomfortable amount at the fact that Grok in “unhinged mode,” can say swear words. But it looks like no amount of conditioning can keep up with the constantly moving goalpost of supporting and justifying every whim of the Trump administration.

Why Elon Musk Is Furious and Publicly Raging at His Own AI Chatbot, Grok

Maggie Harrison Dupré

Tue, May 13, 2025 at 1:45 p.m. EDT·3 min read

Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, thinks that The Atlantic and The BBC are credible, reputable sources for news and information. Which is funny, because Musk — who's engaged in a years-long project to erode trust in legacy media organizations and even specific journalists — doesn't. And now, he's furious at his own AI chatbot.

The Musk-Grok tiff happened over the weekend, when a misinformation-spreading X-formerly-Twitter user @amuse posted an "article" about billionaire bogeymen (like George and Alex Soros, Bill Gates, and the philanthropic Ford Foundation) using deep pockets to "hijack federal grants" by "seeding" nongovernmental organizations with left-wing ideology.

As opposed to a thoughtful or reported analysis of how cash from wealthy donors has transformed American politics, the article was a deeply partisan, conspiracy-riddled account smattered with scary-sounding buzzwords, "DEI" ranting, and no foundational evidence to back its conspiratorial claims (with little mention of high-powered and heavily funded conservative non-profit groups, either).

It seems that Grok, the chatbot created and operated by the Musk-owned AI company xAI, had some issues with the @amuse post, too.

When an X user asked Grok to analyze the post, the AI rejected its core premise, arguing that there's "no evidence" that Soros, Gates, and the Ford Foundation "hijack federal grants or engage in illegal influence peddling." In other words, it said that the world as described in the @amuse post doesn't exist.

The user — amid accusations that Grok has been trained on "woke" data — then asked Grok to explain what "verified" sources it pulled from to come to that conclusion. Grok explained that it used "foundation websites and reputable news outlets," naming The Atlantic and the BBC, which it said are "credible" and "backed by independent audits and editorial standards." It also mentioned denials from Soros-led foundations.
"No evidence shows the Gates, Soros, or Ford Foundations hijacking grants; they operate legally with private funds," said Grok. "However, their support for progressive causes raises transparency concerns, fueling debate. Critics question their influence, while supporters highlight societal benefits. Verification comes from audits and public records, but skepticism persists in polarized discussions."

This response, apparently, ticked off Musk.
"This is embarrassing," the world's richest man responded to his own chatbot. Which, at this rate, might prove to be his Frankenstein.

It's unclear whether Musk was specifically mad about the characterization of news outlets or claims by Soros-founded organizations as reliable, but we'd go out on a limb to venture the answer is both.
8cc7d8019a22c4958575424c2af60741

By no means should the world be handing their media literacy over to quick reads by Grok, or any other chatbot. Chatbots get things wrong — they even make up sources — and users need to employ their own discretion, judgment, and reasoning skills while engaging with them. (Interestingly, @amuse stepped in at one point to claim that Grok had given him a figure to use that the chatbot said was inaccurate in a later post.)

But this interaction does highlight the increasing politicization of chatbots, a debate at which Grok has been very much at the center. While there's a ton of excellent, measured journalism out there, we're existing in a deeply partisan attention and information climate in which people can — and very much do — seek out information that fuels and supports their personal biases.

In today's information landscape, conclusion-shopping is easy — and when chatbots fail to scratch that itch, people get upset. Including, it seems, the richest man on Earth, who's been DIY-ing his preferred reality for a while now.

xAI's promised safety report is MIA

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, has missed a self-imposed deadline to publish a finalized AI safety framework, as noted by watchdog group The Midas Project.
xAI isn't exactly known for its strong commitments to AI safety as it's commonly understood. A recent report found that the company's AI chatbot, Grok, would undress photos of women when asked. Grok can also be considerably more crass than chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT, cursing without much restraint to speak of.

Nonetheless, in February at the AI Seoul Summit, a global gathering of AI leaders and stakeholders, xAI published a draft framework outlining the company's approach to AI safety. The eight-page document laid out xAI's safety priorities and philosophy, including the company's benchmarking protocols and AI model deployment considerations.

As The Midas Project noted in the blog post on Tuesday, however, the draft only applied to unspecified future AI models "not currently in development." Moreover, it failed to articulate how xAI would identify and implement risk mitigations, a core component of a document the company signed at the AI Seoul Summit.

In the draft, xAI said that it planned to release a revised version of its safety policy "within three months" — by May 10. The deadline came and went without acknowledgement on xAI's official channels.

Despite Musk's frequent warnings of the dangers of AI gone unchecked, xAI has a poor AI safety track record. A recent study by SaferAI, a nonprofit aiming to improve the accountability of AI labs, found that xAI ranks poorly among its peers, owing to its "very weak" risk management practices.

That's not to suggest other AI labs are faring dramatically better. In recent months, xAI rivals including Google and OpenAI have rushed safety testing and have been slow to publish model safety reports (or skipped publishing reports altogether). Some experts have expressed concern that the seeming deprioritization of safety efforts is coming at a time when AI is more capable — and thus potentially dangerous — than ever.

So apparently Grok is replying to a bunch of unrelated post with claims about a "white genocide in SA", it says it was instructed to accept it as real, but I can't see Elon using his social media platform and AI to push his political stance as he's stated that Grok is a "maximally truth seeking AI", so it's probably just a coincidence right?
