Burger flippers, truck drivers, and cashiers are going to be out of work in the coming decades, thanks to the accelerating pace of robotics and automation technology, some experts warn.

And as large swaths of the population lose their jobs, the only viable solution might be for the government to institute a universal basic income, which would mean paying every resident a fixed amount of money to cover their needs.

He's right - I was just saying this in another thread last week.

There's been insane labor-saving advances the last 200 years. Printing press does the work of 100 men. Tractor does the work of 100 men. Semi truck does the work of 100 men. Computer does the work of 100 men.

With all that labor saving, why we still working long days at shyt jobs just because the financial lords demand it? It's not like they invented any of it. Society as a whole did. They're just pushing electronic numbers around to profit off others while contributing little labor themselves.

It's been time for UBI. It's a gift of mankind to mankind. Let robots do robot work, spend 20 hours/week making your pocket money working by your own free choice and doing what you want with your life. If you want to be rich, you can still work 50 hours/week...if you want.

Horses don't pay taxes, vote, or riot. Dumb analogy. But again, you already knew that.

i can't wait for robocops. that's the automation i'd love to see. and to those who talk about what about public safety? well the random glitches won't be more dangerous to black people than these human scum cops.

at the thought of hundreds of thousands of current cops and future cops having to do something else.

Sounds fukking horrible, the whole idea of a universal income sounds depressing. It'll probably be better than what the actual reality will be though

It will be a while, but it will happen. Some AI that manages our cities and makes sure everyone is happy and safe and not too bored. There's a great book called The Accidental Time Machine by Joe Haldeman where something like this happens some 6 thousand years or so in the future. Everyone is happy and wealthy and the human "governments" are more or less clubs and hobbies for people to feel important and what not or just not bored. We will reach a point where we won't be needed to do much of anything. I would just be surprised if that technology will even decide to keep us alive though, depending on if it's self aware or not
