Nah. He took a rival league and made it legit before it was absorbed into the NFL. The NFL needed him and the Jets win to make the league expansion a legitimate one. For that alone, along with being the first 4k yard passer, he’s a HOF.
He not in my top 5. :russ: But he better than a lot of the dudes y’all hype.

my biggest pet peeve is networks/sports shows and fans under 40 calling guys not that good from eras where you could actually play defense and overhyping qb’s putting up inflated stats in this era where you can no longer play defense.

the insert name here is having the greatest season ever for a Qb seems like it’s happening every year now because the rules are so geared towards the offense.

Average Qb’s in this generation will put up better numbers then legends from the past and networks and young fans are too dumb to put it into context.

can you imagine what Marino would do in this era? Holy sh1t

Elway is a weird case though. Maybe the most physically talented Qb ever but while football to me is not a stat sport and if a guy had better stats then someone else it doesn’t mean he’s better but if you’re an all time great your stats will at least be somewhat in the ballpark of the best Qb’s of your generation Elways wasn’t.

he was probably around the 7th to 9th best Qb stats wise of his generation.

guys like Boomer Esiason and Ken O Brien had better stats in terms of Td’s to int ratio

If Mark Gastenaeu didnt hit Bernie Kosar late and gave Cleveland an extra chance, the Jets go on to the AFC championship and beat Denver’s ass for a second time that season like they did weeks prior. :to:

Either way, Elway was fortunate to have better defenses than those other qbs mentioned. The Elway narrative is the main reason why Mecklenberg and Atwater arent in the HOF. His story obscures their dominance as players.

That’s why you in your feelings? That small change in history kept the jets as a laughing stop for the next 30-40 years :mjlol:

back then I always just figured Elway was elite I guess because he passed the eye test but back then you’d only see him every once in awhile and there was no Nfl Sunday Ticket or all 22’s.

It’s amazing what Super Bowls will do though. As much as the media kisses his ass and overhypes him now I remember how they destroyed him and called him
a choker till he won.

.

he was an athlete with a super cannon. No one had his arm talent. But he was considered a tier below Marino and Montana, save his come backs. Bernie Kosar was more his rival than him being upper tier. That all changed with TD.

Uncertain grounds
I don’t disagree but that’s like saying Montana doesn’t make the HOF if he doesn’t get drafted by Bill Walsh.

Eh

Its a hypothetical yes but not quite the same..if namath loses that one game he would be an all-time clown. Its unclear how Montanas career would turn out with a different coach but he still had the talent regardless

What’s the issue with being below Marino tho. Imo everyone but Payton and Brady is

I know

but he won the game and it’s one of the biggest moments in American sports history and made the Super Bowl the game it is today. You just gonna have to accept it. :manny:

If anything, Namath is being underrated. He was the first ever 4,000 yard passer and was one of the best QBs in the sport for a few years until his knees said goodbye.
