I think Aikman was held back from having greater numbers. Emmitt was the FIRST player to lead the league in rushing and win a ring. Prior to him, it was deemed impossible for teams to win in that manner. Aikman numbers were sacrificed as a result....and rightfully so..what the Boys did worked.

Exactly, Aikman was in a system built around the run and revolved around a Hall of fame running back. Had he played for a team with not much of a running game he would've put up bigger numbers. One of the most accurate QBs of all time. He had good feel for the game and flawless mechanics.

he was an athlete with a super cannon. No one had his arm talent. But he was considered a tier below Marino and Montana, save his come backs. Bernie Kosar was more his rival than him being upper tier. That all changed with TD.

He was 2nd team all pro when they won in 96. It’s an oversimplification to say he was carried by TD. He performed at a high level while on a stacked team. Elway would not have made the hall of fame before 1993, from his rookie year to 1992 he had thrown more INTs than TDs 4 times which is far more than his contemporaries like Montana, Young, Kelly, or Marino

I'm willing to attribute some of his horrific play to Dan Reeves because his improvement right after Reeves was fired is drastic

That said, nostalgia is the only reason we talk about him being one of the GOATS

If we can acknowledge that Aikman won on extremely stacked teams, why can't people do the same for Elway?

He certainly improved after year ten. However, the the decade prior counts. I cant put him on the level of Marino and Montana as a result of him Being careless. He certainly improved with Mike, but there wasnt anything wrong with Reeves approach considering his success there. At the end of the day, TD doesnt show up, we arenr seeing Elway in these top 5’s ahead of Montana or Marino.

A NY sports radio host I listen to daily said this week that Elway was comparable to Mahomes based on ability, but that Mahomes is considered better because the Chiefs with Andy Reid are better than those 80s Broncos teams that could killed by WAS, Giants, and 49ers. I was like listening to that. Elway was physically talented player no doubt, but even in his prime his stats were average at best. Pundits like Wilbon talk him up like he’s one of the greats and it’s just wasn’t true. Someone in the AFC in the 80s had to take those losses in the Super Bowl and the Broncos were that team three times.

I think what helps Elway is just how DRASTIC his stats increase was with Shanahan

It made people realize "hmm, maybe Elway could have been putting up better numbers if he had a better oc/system "


Remember: Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Brett Favre ALL played on west coast offenses that are KNOWN for generating easy completions. That boosts efficiency (completion percentage, yards, lowers int %).

Look at Mahomes this year and how the Chiefs offense is largely just schemes up drag routes

The Marino offense in Miami was spread out with Marino throwing downfield to wicked fast receivers against basic run-stopping defenses

Meanwhile Elway played in an old school run first pass second offense
