Since 2000 Jays album with 80+ are Blueprint, TBA, AG and 4:44, the others do not deserve high scores imo. Drake has 3 albums around 80, Take Care, NWTS and If you’re reading this. Imo the others do not deserve dope ratings.

So your example is irrelevant for me, you might think Views, BP2 and Magna Carta are classics, that’s cool cause it’s your personal taste in hiphop. And I also get that you’d rather attack the system than just be comfortable with your opinion diverging I used to do that when I was a kid.

And personally I check after a few sites that I respect. In general it’s Pitchfork, Spin, Fantano and those. “New school” I might specifically check complex and those, bars, I’ll go to DEHH and HHDX(they tend to grossly overestimate all albums nowadays though, scale is between 4 and 5), indie rock and pop Gorilla vs Bear and on. Metacritic I use to find reviews and get early indications of what the word is. All in order to filter out mediocre shyt and find good shyt.
You seem like an academic type, who appreciates that perspective. Not me. That's outsider shyt imo. I'll use Metacritic as a general reference but it never dictates what I do and don't listen to. You really trust those guys huh? Seems like they tell you what to like and value, which is problematic when it comes time to share your own opinion.

You've also never attacked the system on here ever to my knowledge lol. Your whole schtick is defending anything the titans, Jay Beyonce Drake Diddy etc do. Except Eminem I guess.

I think these people honestly don’t know anything about hip hop, I think the clowns on here don’t either. Because the stuff that is being said to discredit this album is ridiculous.. People are clowning him for being who he always was but last album were clowning him for trying to grow up and talk about social issues. CTG said he hated woke em, Joe shyt on him for trying to speak on those things. So which is it, he needs to grow up or he needs to be slim shady?

Joe said he ain’t been talking about nothing but shyt on him for trying to talk about something just last year, but NOONE calls him out they just run with like sheep

I was thinking the same thing--lots of reviews say he needs to grow up, and maybe he does to an extent, but he dropped more "mature" content last time and got shyt on for even trying. (He didn’t deserve good reviews for Revival, don’t get me wrong though I liked it more than most, but a lot of the reviews slammed him for even trying.)

The thing is, most compelling artists have a dichotomy to them and Eminem has always been that way. He'll drop a song like Stan right after talking about chainsawing people. It really goes back to Jay-Z's infamous dualities comment.

Also, that critic talks about how Eminem is upset that his fanbase shrunk because of his Trump comments, but again, there's more nuance to the lyrics than that and he ultimately says that it was worth it. I have had to deal with it in my personal life, as I am very anti-Trump and have had people, even family, cut me out of their life over it. And sometimes you wonder if it's worth it because it's not like I'm really changing anyone's mind, but doing the right thing is always worth it, you just have to have that conversation with yourself sometimes. I just don't put it out on wax for people to sit down and analyze.

So now I’m defending Drake and Jay by saying that half of their recent albums don’t deserve high ratings?

The only thing I said about this album was asking a question about if it was any good cause what I was reading was not positive. I.e. even in my original post I questioned the reviewers, thereof asking the coli. Then, presumably, stans started shytting on me and the whole concept of reviews.

And again, it’s not rocket science.

There’s a million albums, limited time, I need recommendations from people that previously have recommended some dope shyt. Coli is one place, my friends another, and reviewers a third. I don’t know why you are trying to make it into something else, or about me or about anything at all.

Ok i can bump like 8 joints off of this out of 13. the girl songs all get skipped for the most part. that Intro to Nice Guy is pure cringe.

The Ringer (one of the best Em songs in a few years)
Greatest (all over the place but fun)
Lucky You (feels like he added his self to a Joyner track but its a good song overall)
Stepping Stone (this one is pretty much a skip too but this is an Em song..reminds me of Eminem Show/Encore)
Not Alike (beat feels too much like that Shelby drive look alive drake shyt but man Royce and Em kill it. Prob my fav next to The Ringer)
Fall (Just realized my tracks are mixed up. this one is good tho.)
Kamikaze (beat kinda goofy but it has its moments esp the 2nd half of the track which def picks up when the beat changes)
Venom (this one is pretty much a skip too...reminds me of Survival...Call of Duty track added to the end of the album)

“It just means so much more
To so much more
People, when you’re rapping and you know what for”

Wanted to really listen to this album before weighing in. Now that I have, all I can think of are those lines from The Eminem Show.

Em’s problem since Encore is simple. He ran out of shyt to talk about, and he’s so far out of touch with modern culture he can’t find inspiration in anything except his own brain.

He doesn’t know what he’s rapping for, he’s just rapping to prove a point he proved 20 years ago.

That’s why this album feels like a step forward; he finally found a target to give all those bars some purpose. It still isn’t Em at his best. But at least we can listen for some type of message, as opposed to Em trying to wow us for the 999,999th time with rap gymnastics.

The irony of Em spending so much time on sharpening his technical skills (and if someone labeled him the GOAT technical rapper, I wouldn’t argue it), is that all those rap theatrics can’t cover up how hollow his rhymes have become. Dude needs 10 run-on sentences to say what he used to be able to say in two bars.

The irony of all those wack-ass punchlines is that Em has always been a punchline rapper. A damn good one! Part of the early excitement, especially around the time of Scary Movie and his features on Missy’s album, was checking just how far he could bend words into crazy punchlines.

Then he dropped that trash ass “window pain” line on Love the Way You Lie. And decided that shyt worked! So now all we get are these ham-fisted setup/punchline bars. It’s like either he doesn’t know they suck, or he’s not around people/places that allow him to see how cringey they can be.

Go back to Eminem Show. The way he flips the last words of each verse of White America gives the hook three different perspectives, and more impact than anything he had to say about Trump in his BET freestyle or on Revival.

To say Kamikaze is a return to form is silly. Eminem has done Kamikaze 100x’s better at different points throughout his career. Specifically MMLP/TES Em. It’s good. But primarily in comparison to how bad some of his music has been recently (I tried to give Revival a spin as well, for context. Dear God. What a shytty album).

Em has two options at this point imo: retire, or go outside, experience life, and find a perspective that allows him to find a new voice.

Jay did it. NaS did it. LL was the master of it. Whether Em can do it remains to be seen... but the fact he still has to resort to calling his opponents fa**ots doesn’t speak well to his chances.

Can he keep dropping music? Of course. But this is probably as good as he can hope for going forward.

I’d give it a 3/5.

I think that’s a fair critique, and if this was the general consensus from his critics his response would have sounded different. People were saying he was just washed up and trash. Saying he needs to step up the subject matter is true. Because most of his raps sound like freestyles.

The thing is he has already got everything off his chest so he would have to leave the house to get some experience and new content. So you are right for the most part

I went back to his earlier catalogue and really listened, to try to put the new album in context.

Breh. It’s flat-out jaw-dropping how consice Marshall used to be. The way he could weave through so many topics and get so much off his chest in a single verse.

Specifically on TES. I never understood why some ppl call that his best album, but listening to it now? Holy shyt.

Not only was he rapping. But dude was emptying his soul, one line at a time. And when he wasn’t doing that he was straight up out-rhyming anyone who would even consider stepping in the square; and he was letting you know that he KNOWS he’s better than everyone else. Epic shyt.

To that point I agree with you. Maybe there’s nothing left for him to say. But if that’s true, and he’s gonna rap anyway, he needs thicker skin. Or he needs to do what Hov did and find something that matters enough to to inspire his pen, a la 4:44.

The problem is I THINK EM tried his attempt at 4:44 with revival but he didn’t have the right production to make it work. I will say executive producers make a huge difference and too many rappers get caught up in their own success
