So I found one of the bigger wholesalers in the city and got a pretty good offer. 50-70% cheaper than where I was looking. I have opted for 18K over platinum since platinum isn't all that great apparently.

that's what i did to secure the center stone and side stones, then i took them to a family jeweler to have the setting made.

Breh Platinum doesn't tarnish or wear out and is an extremely durable metal. It's also looks better against a diamond. Platinum is also a rare metal...what about that isn't great? BTW, did you ever go to Tiffany?

18K gold in an engagement ring will tarnish and wear off over time (keep in mind that your fiancé will wear her ring daily so you don't want a ring wear the metal will wear and lose its luster)

I don't know, I spoken to several people and did research. I was HARD SET on platinum, but it's not necessarily the best. It has some weight to it which is good, but it does have its own issues. I didn't go to Tiffany. I can buy a car with the price they're charging.

Total about 1.5 carat. But I'm getting halo....so there's the diamond and then the little diamonds around it.

Have you looked at the Tiffany Soleste cut? It's the cushion cut with the bead diamonds around it, which creates that "halo" effect, it makes it look like you're getting more diamonds than you're paying for

You def don't have to go to a big box store. Just make sure you've seen the work of whoever is making your setting and you trust them to do it right.
