Even back then I knew jealousy played a part in Shaq leaving. Of course the money played a part but if they offered him 4/80 then that's more per year then the 7/120 that he saw Mourning get. I think that was just an out for him to leave cause he didn't like the shine that Penny was getting with the commercials and endorsements. It's easy now to say they should have stayed together but at the ages of something like 23 and 24 it wasn't clear to them so see that. Moreso then Kobe and Shaq I wanted these two to stay together cause they had the chemistry off bat and went to the Finals together at an early time and no one could have held them back from titles.

The Passage of Time
Anybody shytting on that Webber trade forget that Webber was a surefire superstar while Penny was considered a huge unknown due to playing at a small school. Knowing how Webber's time in Golden State turned out it's easy to shyt on that trade, but in reality if Webber stayed in GS those draft picks wouldn't have been all that valuable and having that one superstar is way more valuable than the depth of some mid first round picks. Only problem was that trade turned into a worst case scenario for GS with them giving Webber a bad contract that let him force a trade and Penny turning out to be completely legit.

Memphis State University/University of Memphis was a powerhouse in NCAA basketball in the 70's, 80's and 90's. That small school always had basketball in the fore front. To say University of Memphis was "Unknown" is an insult to someone's basketball intelligence. You're taking a Shaq quote and trying to make it fact. When the fact was Penny was a 1st Team Parade All American out of HighSchool and was 1st and 2nd Team All American at Memphis, while Shaq was at LSU. He was a well known commodity and was featured in a lot of CBS and ESPN Saturday packages.

Played in a small conference, but not a small school as far as basketball is concerned. Shaq knew who Penny was, because University of Memphis smacked around the school in the SEC while Penny was at Memphis, a school that routinely beat LSU, and that was Arkansas.

and the early 2000s...todays NBA has lowest amount of star power in a long ass time

wouldn't say it's low...it's just that you don't have traditional star big men. Traditional/low-post Star big men are a lot more entertaining. When Andrew Bynum had a solid couple years...he was very entertaining on/off the court. When Javele McGee has a little run he was entertaining on/off the court!

shaq, deke, dream, morning, ewing, barkley were more entertaining/interesting that the little guys.

Orlando under John Gabriel was luckiest and most cursed team at the same time, mixed with a little bit of idiocy.

Let Shaq go, Penny breaks down..(were the 3 additional draft picks they got for webber of any value?) Make a big splash to sign Tmac, Duncan and Hill.

The best one stays home (SA), another wasn't a winner and the other ws signed and traded for Ben Wallace, who at the time was a throw away piece for salary cap reasons. :wow::wow::wow::wow::wow::wow:

No one can tell me Orlando getting 2 back to back was not fixed. fukk them besides the 09 team that I loved (minus Dwight)

Powerhouse??? How the hell are you defining powerhouse??? Were they putting out top level prospects or winning titles or year after year considered title contenders??? In the 90s it was all about Big East and ACC.

I didn't even realize Shaq called Memphis unknown. I'm going off memory and reaction at the time. Memphis was not a team shown on national TV at the time and did not have a high profile. It's not like today where there is 20 channels to show college games on where if you're considered any sort of prospect people can follow your games. The majority of the nation had barely seen Penny Hardaway play. Hence the label of being an unknown talent. Don't try to rewrite history. Did you grow up in or around Memphis? Cause you know a lot of the packages were based on region in regards to the games that would be shown in each area.

While Penny was at Memphis, Memphis was shown regularly on National TV, Rivalry games versus Louisville, Tenn(A. Houston)., Cincy Bearcats(Blount and Van Exel), Arkansas(Todd Day Miller and "McNasty") big time rivalry game, Memphis beat them twice. The story line was can The SEC big boys match up to Memphis from Conf USA because they had already beaten Tenn and then the mopped Arkansas and then they beat them again in the NCAA Torn. I don't know how old you are but I do know that Memphis has had so great basketball teams. In the 80's with W. Bedford and Keith Lee, beat up on P. Ewing and Georgetown, Lost to Phi Slamma Jamma Clyde Drexler, Hakeem and Mecheaux them boys. I saw this shyt from Los Angeles, because during that time period Memphis was getting all it's talent to stay home and became a hot bed for recruiting because they were doing so well.

Penny Unknown?
Lets see How this stands up

Highly recruited by all the big schools North Carolina, Georgetown, Syracuse,UCLA, Ark, Memphis, Duke, Tenn, and more.

Games were being called by Billy Packer, Al McGuire, dikk Vitale regionally and nationally
Games were featured in the SEC because of games versus high profile teams Tenn, and Ark.,

After Freshmen year people thought he was gonna go pro, featured story on Sports Center

Penny had flashy stylish game, that's why the "Blue Chips" producers wanted him, it's just that Penny was an introvert.

How does an unknown get picked at #3 and was regularly talked about being in the top 5 of the draft since he was a freshmen?
