because numbers don't really make sense, I've already explained this to you. Write a review for a game and then give it a 7.2
That's a non answer. There is a reason why it got a 7.2. What reason do you have to believe they pull it out of their ass? Why do you think they're not comparing? Why do you think they're not taking into consideration the different aspects of a game?

the trend is shifting because a couple sites dropped review scores?
It's been talked about at length for a while now, the numbers don't make sense.

YouTube changed the rating system a long time ago for the better, steam on top now shows a like/dislike scale rather than just the metacritic score that people were so caught up on.

Rottentomatoes also uses a scale based on whether people like the movie or not.

Exactly what does a 7.2 mean? That's what I want, what is a 7.2 out of 10?

Is it 72% better than the games ever released? Or just the ones released this year? Or maybe 72% better than the games released in the genre.

People even rate looks on a 10 scale! A 10 scale is very, very commonplace! shyt :damn:
Nobody talks like that in real life breh :heh:

In real life, I talk about stuff I like with words and emotions, not numbers.

I don't be like "breh I just smashed this 6.9 Peruvian chick the other night, her headgame was a 7.4/10 but I'll give her a few weeks to patch things up and maybe i'll up it to 8/10!"

Even with videogames I only talk about the numbers if I'm talking about reviews specifically. After that, we just talk about games naturally like "I liked this, I didn't like that, this was dope, that was wack, this is trash, this is crazy" etc.

The way people talk on the coli is not how people talk in real life. If you find people that talk like that, congrats. Regular, colloquial convo's don't involve such verbiage. There's always going to be a group of folks determined to reduce everything down to a number or certificate.

I assume they take into consideration gameplay, graphics, replaybility, etc. I don't think it's as arbitrary as you think

That's just anecdotal. I have anecdotal evidence that points to the contrary. I hear people use 10 scales all the time.

The consumers do and that's the point. People hang on to the numbers and run with it, people's livelihoods are literally at stake if a game doesn't score 80% across the board...do you realize how utterly ridiculous that is?

If they don't make a good game, shouldn't their job be up for consideration? I see no problem with that.

How do you get rated at your job? They rate me on a 5 point scale on various aspects of my job. Most of my jobs have rated me on a number scale. It's the way of the world

and I can bet you those anecdotes you'll bring up are context specific i.e. discussing reviews or something formal or important and shyt. I'm talking regular day to day convo like just chilling with your boys and shyt.

I wish I heard a nikka around me say "Yo that Tomb Raider was a 8.7/10 man"
:comeon:

I talk like that. I have friends that talk like that. A 10 scale is natural

You don't see the problem with an arbitrary number that's not wholly consistent and applicable across every title as ridiculous?? An 8.5 for X doesn't mean it's better than the 8.1 Y had.
"Good" etc is subjective. There's always going to be some sort of subjectivity at the end of the day. Yeah, sure it's helpful at times but sometimes you can just use your own intuition and taste to make a decision.

Imagine if you will, a number scale being used to rate the looks and desirability of black women during the early 1900's. The "consensus" as by the oligarchy(which in this case would be white folks) would seen as the final say and anyone who says otherwise is just "mad".

anyone with a brain would see that it's some bullshyt.

Yes, of course there will be subjectivity. That's why meta-analyses and aggregates are so good. They put a bunch of numbers together to get an average. It's a way to make things less subjective.
