OP you recently said you weren't up on the Roots like that back in the mid 90's when you discovered Scott Storch was in their mix just a few months ago. I'm saying that because Eve told this same story a long time ago, this ain't a new story.

for a conscious group, they sure shafted some women with this record. Jill Scott wrote the hook and vocals were replaced with Erykah. Erykah gets the Grammy. Eve not credited. no grammy either? smh

Loved The Roots back then.

Probably one of my favorite groups, at the time. But the whole conscious thing for them, was all bullsh*t. These dudes were fakes. All of the "conscious rappers" back then were. That was just marketing. In reality, behind the scenes, they were more shady and savage than the damn "gangsta rappers".

Not only that

But a lot of them “neo soul” and conscious artists lazy as shyt and rather shroud themselves in mystery and acting like they’re work in so grand than actually making music

Smh at Badu pushing her album back again

I don't really care. It's all entertainment to me. If they were on some shady stuff behind the scenes but still pushing knowledge and positivity to the youth in their music, that's still 1000 times better than promoting murder and drugs. And also we gotta remember they were all basically kids back then. Living a fast lifestyle. I'm sure they prolly regret some of the decisions they made back then. But you live and you learn.

Jill Scott got the short end of the stick with that song too

She helped write it and they they did her dirty by asking Badu to sing on it and be in the video :dead:

That's stuff happens all the time though. Jill got credited and paid as a writer. Badu had a way better voice for that song though. There's no denying it.

I know of this but never heard a full story. Do we know if it was the Roots that made the call at that time or was it a label thing?

alot of this disappointment in mystique comes from people projecting their own imagination and standards of being "conscious " onto these personalities.

the concept of a "Conscious rapper" is a means labeling a commodity not a defined ideology or worldview

do anyone know who owns this music?

or at least who owned it at its release?

the paid talent is generally the least agentic in this entire process.... they get paid AFTER everyone else... if they get paid at that
