People who allow this to overshadow "real problems" don't care about the real problems.

Can't prove either way, but I disagree. There are a million causes to care about. Delivering an effective message in the right way that gets people to care into action is a difficult art. I view it as people latently caring, but those feelings need fostered and if you put people on the defensive, they'll shut down; or, if you do silly shyt like in this video, it is distracting and people have a short attention span, so they'll replace their care for your cause with someone else.

Having a day of absence in which you make your presence known to everyone by showing how important your presence really is, is NOT the same as demanding someone else' absence.

One is demonstrating your importance to society, and the other is actually oppressing a portion of society.

You CAN'T fight oppression with oppression, ESPECIALLY when you are fighting against a demographic that 9/10 has been fighting the same social issues(liberal students and professors).

This day was actually based on a play by a Douglas Turner Ward IN which everyone in the town took a day from work and the town fell in to chaos without all the black people working and it demonstrated the "unnoticed" or more importantly the "unrecognized" importance of the black ppl in that town.

But it has nothing to do with "the state of higher education in the country" or even BLM in general, it's some people at one college being dumb and reacting poorly to the current state of affairs.

This decision was reached through discussion with POC Greeners who voiced concern over feeling as if they are unwelcome on campus, following the 2016 election.
