Gonna peep this tonight, can't wait.
You think we ever get another step bros album?"Rain Every Season" is the one.
I guess my rationale is that Ev has only gotten better as a rapper. My original critique of him was that he was a bit of a backpacker cliche but since his solo career started his subject matter and wordplay has only gotten better. The more of his personal life he's willing to share, the better it gets IMO and there's a lot of that here
Production-wise this album isn't for everyone, but I also think he curated a great selection of producers with a cohesive lo-fi sound, the unusual samples all blend well together on this album. Sebb, Conductor, Al and Ev himself all brought the heat
I think Greatest Motivation is the only beat I don't love as it's a bit repetitive, but it also sounds like some old RZA shyt which ain't a bad thing. There are some beautiful ass beats on here overall
This is a moody ass album but it's hitting perfect for me on a personal level, being in my late 30s and looking for inspiration from this rap shyt. Evs been doing this for a long time and it's rare to see someone in rap get sharper with age and experience
Nah I agree completely different series, but the entire game has changed. I think we can all agree this is the lane he’s been grinding to find the whole time, the evolution of evidence over the span of his career is crazy.I said this to my homie yesterday. Vol 1 and Vol 2 are basically not albums. They're like one giant ass song. Ev even wanted Vol 1 to be all on one track byt his label wouldn't allow him to do it. I think of Vol 1 and 2 like a giant collage of just different moments. There are less standout songs (nothing sounds like a single on either album), but the whole big picture is high quality. And the verses are way more stream of consciousness / free association type bars.
Before Vol 1 and 2 the projects have a lot larger "moments" on them. On Cats & Dogs and Weather or Not, damn near every song sounds like it could be a single and have a big video.
It sounds like a cop out but I think it's almost impossible to compare the fractured, half-finished demo tape feel of Vol 1 and Vol 2 to any of his previous albums. Or hell, damn near anyone's albums. I can't think of another rapper purposely making "demo tapes" like this. I have to be in an entirely different mood to listen to the Weather series albums vs the Unlearning series albums.
And Weather or Not is my least favorite Ev album, though, even though most of the songs are good. I'm 99% sure it's Ev's least favorite too.
Greatest Motivation somewhat reminded me of this song
Favorite Injury is near the top for me but the others are my bottom 3. Stay Alive started slapping for me a lot more after I saw the video though. Different Phases is cool but I think it’s placed weirdly on the sequence. Greatest Motivation just hasn’t hit yet.The songs i can't quite get in to are Greatest Motivation, Favorite Injury, Stay Alive & Different Phases.
Some of them might grow on me though.
I legit wonder if the Rhymesayers youtube channel did some shyt to get blacklisted or half shadow banned or something. The views for this thing are horrendous. The track with Larry June barely has 1,000 views, and the video for Stay Alive doesn't even have 10,000 views. There's no press for this thing. Just feels super odd all around. The views for Throw It All Away are almost 8 million, and Ev has a lot of other videos with millions of views, or even strong 6 figures.
Makes me sad that more people won't hear this.
