It might be played out to America, but that shyt has taken a new direction from the "exclusivity" thing to connecting people like MySpace did, but obviously more successfully all over the world.
There's a kid who was born in Egypt & their parents called her "Facebook," lol. We might be ahead of the technological curve, but the absorption rate around the world from Facebook is crazy.

what exactly is there to add to social networking that facebook doesn't have or isn't working on? for a while video chat seemed like the thing.. but they took care of that too

Its still popular with young people who have nothing better to do with their lives than keep up with everyone.
It's not going anywhere because its too centralized and convenient for me people. Believe it or not, people HATE creating new accounts. Once you have an install base, its pretty hard to lose them. Look at what it took to bring SOHH down.
I definitely wouldn't invest im them tho.
Where else can they take it? All the changes they do piss more people off if anything and Twitter is much more serviceable as a "here's what I'm doing right now" vehicle.

I don't think it's a fad, it's a part of a lot of people's everyday life. People have a lot invested in their accounts. It has a strangle hold on a lot of people, something truly unique and revolutionary has to come along to dig into that market.
In the last 3 years I've never said anything worth remembering on facebook and I have never read anything worth remembering. I still check in every now and then to catch up with people from way back and distant relatives but that's about it.
I dont Facebook. At most I look up a friend I lost contact with and send a message, not a friend request, giving them my number to call. fukk I want people who already have my number msging me on FB for so it can send me a notification to my email that will then pop up like a text on my phone when yo ass could've just texted me to begin with?

I will say this, its the best way I know of to keep tabs on old friends and fam without having to talk to them via phone.

social networking is only a problem when people are on it all day long and it interferes with their ability to meet and greet with the outside world. I think that's what parents should be looking out for with their youngins because these kids are growing up to become socially awkward.
