Idk...I'm hearing publishing is worthless and it's about "masters"...man,idk
Publishing is not worthless. Taylor Swift owned her publishing as she was a songwriter but not her masters for her first 6 albums. Because she own the publishing she could re-record them and re-release them.

Those Bad Boy artist weren't big enough to get their own masters. From my understanding publishing is owning the original ingredients of the song (lyrics, melody, ect) Owning the masters is owning the original recordings made from those ingredients. Obviously you want to own the masters if possible but you need a level of sway to swing that.

Biggie and Puff make the value jump..

112 gets an honorable mention

Anyone arguing with you about that isn't worth a response

False.

Mase has huge songs that don't feature Puff or Biggie. Same with Total. Same with 112. Same with Faith.

Are ya'll really familiar with Bad Boy or are ya'll under the impression that Puff and Biggie are the only ones with hits.

Being a songwriter does not mean you own your publishing. That's where the whole issue gets blurred because people think just because you write, you own the publishing. Publishing is entirely different from writing.

"Puffy is a snake because he took publishing from these poor little kids who didn't know any better". No, breh, publishing costs money. And nobody fresh off the block signing a recording contract is going to be able to just get songs published without knowing the right channels and legal ins and outs of how that process works. And it isn't as simple of registering songs with BMI and ASCAP.

On point! Puff made a recording deal and a publishing deal meaning he is providing publishing services which include overhead, administrative, accounting, legal and technical to collect and follow up on royalties and protect the interests of the published content. That sh*t aint cheap, hes got staff that does that as their day job. He explained this on the let the lox hot 97 radio stations that he made a publishing deal he renders services.

There aint many new artists in the 90s who are entrepreneurial or have the capital to manage and admin their own publishing. If you want to get into the game you need to include that as a publishing contract. And in this industry theres options to sell part of ur publishing to render those services.

Post 2010 if an upcoming artist builds their own fanbase and movement and has proven this, they have more leverage to negotiate in the contracting, thats not easy to achieve.

An example In the investment world - investment managers take a percentage or the investment portfolio to render investment services to grow the returns and portfolio. Clients dont come back and say give us those points or money back after the fact.

Why would a publishing company do things for free its a for profit business?

TYRONE GA!
This is pretty standard in the industry though.

They have to decide if shytting on Puff and bad boy is worth more than their publishing to them.

WRONG

THE PUBLISHER GETS 50% OF THE
SONG ROYALTIES AND THE
SONG WRITER/PRODUCER SPLIT
THE OTHER 50%.

PUFFY WAS ALWAYS GONNA GET
50% OF THE PUBLISHING CREDIT
FOR THE WORK THEY DID WITH BADBOY

WHAT HE DID WAS BUY THEIR
WRITING CREDITS FOR
THE REST OF THEIR LIVES
AND HE DID IT BEFORE
THEY PUT ANY ALBUMS OUT
SO THEY DIDNT REALIZE
HOW THEY WERE SCREWING
THEMSELVES.

BIG AND MASE WERE OUT HERE
GHOSTWRITING UNDER THE TABLE
JUST SO PUFF WOULDNT GET
THEIR WRITING ROYALTIES.

PUFF HAS BEEN COLLECTING
WRITING ROYALTIES ON
EVERY SONG THESE ARTISTS
DID GOING FORWARD.

YOU LOOK AT A
POST BADBOY JADAKISS FEATURE
OR ALBUM AND SEE
JUSTIN COMBS PUBLISHING
IN THE CREDITS.

Publishing =/= writing credits. If an artist does not have an established entity to publish their works, they are at the mercy of whatever publishing company their works were published under until they gain control of their publishing.

WHEN THE LOX WAS ON HOT 97
TALKING ABOUT DROPPING

THEY WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT
ALL OF THE POST BADBOY shyt
PUFF WAS MAKING MONEY FROM.

ALL THE WRITING ROYALTIES FROM EVERY JADA/SHEEK/STYLES/LOX

WHEN MASE HAS BEEN COMPLAINING

HE JUST WANTED TO BE

HE CAN MAKE NEW MUSIC
AND WRITE FOR PPL WITHOUT
PUFF RECIEVING HIS WRITING ROYALTIES.

PUFF GAVE THEM THIS shyt BACK
WHEN THEYRE ALL OLD AND COLD
SO ANY NEW shyt THEY MAKE
GOING FORWARD AINT GONNA

FROM THESE SONGS.

PUFF HAD shyt SET UP
SO NASTY...

nikka GOT ALL OF BIGS WRITING ROYALTIES
FROM THOSE ALBUMS AND
MADE SURE TO GET A PRODUCER CREDIT
ON DAMN NEAR EVERY SONG
ON TOP OF HIS 50% PUBLISHING CREDIT.

DUDE OWNED 80+ PERCENT OF
EVERY SONG...

ADD TO THE FACT DAMN NEAR
ALL THE SONGS USED SAMPLES
SO THOSE SAMPLED ARTISTS/PUBLISHERS
GOT A SHARE OF THE WRITING CREDIT
ALONG WITH EVERY OTHER ARTIST
ON THE SONG AND THAT
SHARE THESE GUYS ARE GETTING
BACK IS SMALL AS fukk.

3 nikkaS ON 1 SONG
PLUS A SAMPLED ARTIST

Breh, the publisher owns the copyright to the written song. Just because you wrote the skng doesn't mean you own it. It is property of the publisher. Unless you want every and anybody stealing your songs without, YOU NEED PUBLISHING. If you don't have your own publishing set up, then you would have to hire a publisher. They own your music.

How are ya'll this old and don't understand, MOST ARTISTS DON'T OWN THEIR OWN MUSIC. You can't sell publishing you didn't have in the first place.
