I’m not sure if he was even “Black famous”….and if he was, it was only to a certain degree.
I think he was well known and fukked with for the people who generally between 25-33 right now.
Folk who are 40 (now) had already hit that point of their life where they ain’t checkin for non-mainstream artists to the same degree as when they were younger.
Victory Lap maybe/probably would’ve got him on their radar moreso…but I don’t think it would’ve been a massive crossover project to a mass of white people.
When he died, a lot of the dudes who are 40 now…started fukking with his catalog heavy.

As an aside, I’ve seen quite a few (hip hop) artists live. Primarily down in Miami.
Nip and Jay Elec are the only concerts where the audience was super majority black.
Especially with Jay Elec it had me mad surprised since he kinda fell in that undergroundish lyrical lane. In Miami I feel like you usually see a lot more whites and a bit of Asian, white Latin for those type artists.
It was dope.

Didn't Nipsey win a Grammy for victory lap? He was on the cusp of a massive breakthrough in his career. He wasn't some unknown underground rapper.
