How do you feel about how his career panned out? I think from about his 4th album on, it's been pretty disappointing for someone of his talent and such a high quality early body of work.

I thought Nas was the best back in the 90's, but Common was low key my favorite rapper. He was the wittiest rapper and had ridiculous wordplay. He was very regular and relatable during the Pac/Biggie/Wu era when being a larger than life anti-hero was the thing, and he made good music about just being himself. He could drop jewels of wisdom interspersed between Too $hort-level vulgar sex rhymes. The first 3 albums were great and Resurrection is a classic and one of the GOAT hip-hop albums imo.

One Day It Will All Make Sense... was the last album prime vintage Common album. I know a lot of people like Like Water For Chocolate but I thought that shyt was pretty weak. Electric Circus was a very experimental album. Experiments often fail and that one did.

He came back strong with Be. He needed Kanye to help bring him back, but it was a really good album and he reinvented himself a bit. Finding Forever was good too.

He was back. Then he dropped that Universal Mind Control garbage. The shyt was :trash: and what made it worse is that he "sold out" on it and it wasn't even necessary. He was making quality music that was selling decent and he making Hollywood money by then. And he makes an album over throwaway Neptunes beats? fukk outta here. Been looking at him funny since then.

The next 3 albums were meh. They weren't wack, but they weren't particularly good either. He hasn't made a dope album in going on 10 years honestly.

He's still one of the GOATs to me because his peak was strong and sustained. But I can't ignore that out of 11 albums, I only want to listen to 5 of them. He's moved down my all time list in the past 8 years or so.

Common is one of the GOATS and slept on. He gave us classics, "one day it will all make sense", "like water of chocolate" and "be". Dude is the truth!!

Although his last albums haven't been up to those earlier levels, that is not surprising given rappers rarely maintain the artistic echelons over that many years. He still has given pure common ether like "Blak majik" and pyramids, meAnwhile acting and promoting other black causes and projects.

His issue is PR, promotion and the lingering bad smell of the crotchet

He was poised to be the best rapper in the game when De La dropped 'The Bizness' featuring him. Then he came out with only slightly above average 'One Day It'll All Make Sense' album and his momentum kinda sputtered out on that front. LWFC was a smash because it was somehow arguably the best Soulquarian album and Dilla was firing on ALL cylinders throughout.

Then he shat out Electric Circus and became one of the most perpetually wack and embarrassing former greats I've personally ever witnessed.

"Resurrection" is in my top 5 rap records of all time.

I agree that some of his records after that weren't for me ... but I could never begrudge him for doing things his way (the music, the acting, the commercials, whatever). I respect him for finding a lame, and staying as true to himself as possible in the music business.

But yeah. I wish there were more records like "resurrection" and "one day." There have been a bunch of great tracks since, but other than "be," the albums as a whole weren't my thing.

fukk that spineless jelly back c00n I'll never forget this sh!t :pacspit:

Rapper Common: Racism Can End If Blacks Extend Hand “in love” to Whites

“Hey, we all know there’s been some bad history in our country. We know that racism exists. I’m extending a hand like, ‘Hey, we want to get past this. We’ve been bullied, we’ve been beat down, but we don’t want it anymore,'” said the rapper.

“We’re not extending a fist,” he continued. “We’re not saying, “you did us wrong!’ It’s more like, “Hey, I’m extending my hand in love. Let’s forget about the past as much as we can, and let’s move from where we are now. How can we help each other? Can you try to help us, because we’re going to help ourselves.”

Nah, not at all. Resurrection is one of the greatest rap albums of all time to me. His next album wasn't as good but was still dope. I mean come on...

:wow:

Like Water For Chocolate is an amazing, beautiful album.

Electric Circus was a miss but tbh I need to revisit it.

Be is a classic.

Finding Forever is cool

After that he fell off although Nobody Smiling isn't bad.

That's not a bad catalog for a rapper :yeshrug:

2 classics and 2 more dope ass albums...

One Day was the album where Common started making those bad, serious records like that terrible abortion song with Cee Lo. Also Badu reared her head for the first time on the throwaway type Roots song. And that stretch of songs about his grandma getting robbed was always a little strange to me.

There are some great No ID beats on it but it's a 3.5 album that arrived when the game was ready for A CLASSIC.
