Music icon Prince had a thirty-five year long legal battle with his record label Warner Brother’s over the ownership of his master tapes. Masters are the original recordings of a song and with these come a great degree of artistic freedom such as control over where these songs are distributed. In fact, after winning these rights Prince removed his catalog from Spotify and Apple Music, instead hosting his music exclusively on Jay-Z’s streaming service Tidal.
On April 21st 2016, Prince was found dead in an elevator at his estate and studio in Paisley Park. This fact is particularly noteworthy as Prince had eerily written about elevators and death in his song “Let’s Go Crazy”:
And if de-elevator tries to bring you down
Go crazy (Punch a higher floor! )
Jay-Z also has personal experience with elevators as a source of controversy. In May 2014 Jay-Z was physically attacked by Beyoncé’ssister Solange while in an elevator. Beyoncé spoke of this incident in her song “***Flawless (Remix)”:
Of course sometimes shyt go down when it’s a billion dollars on an elevator
Of course sometimes shyt go down when it’s a billion dollars on an elevator
After the release of Beyoncé’s visual albumLEMONADE, various sources speculated that this scuffle was actually indicative of larger problems in Jay and Bey’s marriage. Jay-Z, however, remained unscathed by these rumors. Much in the same way, Jay proudly proclaims that Prince’s legacy will not be tarnished by his elevator related death–perhaps because Prince is rumored to have a secret vault of music with hundreds of unreleased songs.
