I think the misconception comes in the individual’s understanding
If Jesus lives by example and carry outs or fulfills the law in a way that seems to solve the problems people have with the Old Testament (due to their lack of understanding) then we are to follow Jesus example
This is I guess what Christians see as a departure from the old and New Testaments
I like to think of it as ERAS
Obviously we aren’t in the Old Testament theocracy of Israel
The temple is destroyed. The priesthood is non existent
No sacrifices are being made, etc
Jesus said our body is the temple, his followers are a royal priesthood, and the kingdom is within/holy spirit will be in you.
So technically we are in the Kingdom era or “Gentiles time”
Everything that happened to Israel technically doesn’t apply to life RIGHT NOW in a literal sense outside of prophecy of course. So why do atheist keep going back to Jewish scriptures to say “gotcha” to followers of Jesus especially those who don’t identify as Israel in the Torah.
"whoever defiles the temple of God, him shall God destroy"
