Heels don't really want to be heels anymore. They want to be liked and sell merchandise and then take the mask off on podcasts. Being all humble and shyt.

Take Rick Rude for example. You never seen Rude out of character.. Ever... Plus it's a real life reflection of who he really was. You would think he's a a$$hole 24/7 but he made it work and drew money with every Babyface he faced. Rude was a prick and it worked.

Same with 80s Piper.

Even Hoegan first heel run

It doesn't help they book babyfaces to look like goofs They made Cody look like a chump . Who gonna want to support that?

It's weird that they booked the finish like that because Triple H has been protecting Cody for two years now. After Cody lost to Roman, Triple H made it a point to keep his character strong so people would want to see the rematch.

I don't know when TKO started to have so much influence over the product, but things haven't been the same since the Netflix premiere.

Piper in the '80s is also one that eventually became a babyface all on his own, without really doing much to turn into one. He was getting cheered at Mania 2 against Mr. T (probly because he was actually whoopin' T's ass in that silly boxing match :heh: ). He took two months off, didn't do anything babyface-ish and immediately got cheered when he came back. Similar things happened with Macho, and with Jake - they were both getting cheered before they actually made a turn (now that I think about it, Honky Tonk Man was such a heel, he played a role in both of their turns). Sometimes, fans just decide they like you no matter what. TBH, I think Seth may have entered that territory and it's gonna take a lot to get him outright booed.

.some say HHHunter exposing too much via kayfabe, others say the families have been priced out of live events and it's all older hardcore fans attending again.

This is a big one that goes ignored.

Go to reddit (r/squarecircle) and you got a wrestling forum saying "kayfabe" doesn't matter.

I'm not saying we need 100%.

But, the Wyatt6 is getting paid enough not to go to White Castle and take pictures with fans litterally weeks after their debut.

Modern heels want to be season 1 Walter White instead of season 5 Walter White

This is so good you could write a term paper on it.

Walter was the "understandable" villian for a minute.

I remember my experience with the character; started with the Box Cutter episode where Walter and Jesse looked weak and Gus look like the Devil himself.

I finished that season from that point and was interested in how Walter got to that point.

Started from season 1 while he was a weak, meek, unassuming guy with his back against the wall. Then, he developed to an egomaniac, who following found something his weak ass was good at and decided that despite his entire family being in danger he was willing to fight a damned cartel for his self conifendence.

Damn, that was a great show.

Not that I disagree about Seth needing something to freshen it up, but I don't really agree with the idea that heels have to hate the fans or not enjoy being cheered or shouldn't do exciting things. A heel doesn't have to be some horrible figure who hates everyone and just wants to do evil for the lulz, they just have to be willing to break the rules to win. I don't think a heel has to be an antagonist to the fans as much as their opponents.

So, what do you do with the faces?

Everyone has their opinions of heels, but, they are completely forgetting the babyface.

The heels job is to eventually put the face over.

See, Roman. Had a cool presentation, but, deep down, he was abusive to everyone around him and almost NEVER won clean...never did 450 splashes and shyt in the ring.

Was Roman not doing cool moves and being a shythead and cheating to win to antagonize the fans, or was it to antagonize his opponents and win? I actually think heels that do shyt in the middle of the match just to troll fans is an example of poor psychology. My view has evolved over a lifetime of watching this dumb shyt, a heel should never not do big moves and spots just to troll the fans when those moves and spots can help them win a match. Keep the trolling to promos, imo. But there's also no specific need for heels to hate the audience just because they are bad guys.

Being intentionally boring and bad seems like a very Vince specific trope that should have died off 20 years ago.

This is another way of excusing HHH, the stuff happening on the main roster has been happening since the B&G days. TKO is run by non wrestling people so I doubt they're as hands on as people want to believe.

Trust me, I'm not excusing Triple H. He exposed himself something fierce during the road to WrestleMania and a lot of the booking decisions were bizarre. But WWE a year ago and WWE now don't feel the same. It's like they were putting all their time and energy into the Netflix premiere, and it ended up being nowhere near the spectacle I thought it would be. Ever since then, it just seems like the energy has shifted.

I know they have money coming out of the pockets now, but it's a lot more corporate than it was last year. Almost like it happened overnight.

I LIVE IN A CARDBOARD BOX!
One of the funniest post-Mania reactions that I've seen and heard so far was when Cena called the crowd out for booing Cody, calling them a bunch of heartless b*stards, and the crowd popped for it.

CENA: "You boo him on Friday, and you cheer him on Friday, and you boo him on Sunday. And I say his name, the man that we all put on our shoulders last year because he finished his story, now disgusts you?!? :rudy:"

THE LAS VEGAS CROWD: "Yes, we are a bunch of unloyal pieces of shyt. You tell us, John! :mj: :blessed:  :ohlawd:  :lawd::myman::dj2: :banderas:"

I just find humor in that for some reason. It's true in a way too. I think the same may happen to Jey Uso eventually as well.

The European tour and WrestleMania back to back broke everyone’s brains. It also doesn’t help everyone wants to be the cool heel with legitimate points instead of the villain. Seth for some reason is still engaging the crowd with the singalong and the whole visionary revolutionary Seth freaking Rollins shtick
