Nobody said that discussing women's rights is a threat.
What I'm saying is that the misogyny that black women face boils down to racism, as opposed to sexism. Sexism certainly exists but it exists as an agent of the more greater discrimination (racism). In other words, black women are not oppressed because they're woman but because they're black. All the women's rights issues that black feminism supposedly combat, mainstream feminism has been combating (and in many respects have eradicated). Mainstream feminism doesn't benefit black women as much because of racism. Hence, it behooves black women to unite with black men and fight against racism. In theory, if we were to combat racism successfully, then the gains of the mainstream feminist movement would by default be shared with black women. Conversely, if black women successfully fought for women's rights issues, they'd still be left in the dark because they're black.
Moreover, all black feminism appears to do is pit black women against black men in the name of gender rights. In reality, it benefits dominant society ultimately because the character of black men (and the black community in general) is being assassinated by black women instead of whites. Furthermore, black men generally are not in the position to discriminate against black women on the basis of gender. You ever notice how members of the mainstream feminist movement reach out to black feminists solely when black feminists are attacking black men (i.e., the street harassment movement)? You ever notice how dominant society is all too cooperative with black feminists when black men are on the firing line (see: Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Chris Brown)? Think about it and put it all together.
Ultimately, black feminism has not contributed to the upheaval and the prosperity of the black community. Hell, black feminism doesn't even help black women. If it did either, y'all would've been able to point out tangible gains made by the black feminist movement. Instead, the movement doesn't even have a tangible definition.
Until you or anybody else can clearly and specifically explain how black women exclusively suffer from sexism, I will continue to believe that black feminism is a point and nebulous off-shoot of mainstream feminsim (even though the larger movement mainly benefits white women).
You know, you raise a lot of good points, and I think there's some merit to what you're saying about co-opting the agenda of dominant culture. I think that hip-hop culture can and has been co-opted to reinforce dominant ideas about black men as well. Actually any negative aspect of our culture can and probably has been co-opted. That's not a reason to throw a baby out with the bathwater. My personal experience with black feminism has been largely within the realm of academia and community outreach. In real life, I haven't seen the black male bashing and negative divisiveness that occurs online. But I have seen both men and women in deep discourse and involved in mentoring black girls and black boys, hosting discussions about what it means to be a black woman and a black man today in our society, conducting workshops on identity, sexuality, race, and how to better communicate with peers, and reaching out to our prison systems to help educate our people behind bars.
I think if all you know about black feminism is from online interactions, then it would be perfectly reasonable to say its divisive and doesn't help anyone. For a community activist and academic thougrh, I don't see it that way at all.
1. Your comparison to hip hop (among other aspects of our culture) is a disingenuous analogy because, unlike hip hop or other movements in the black community, black feminism has NOT produced anything tangible. It is a toothless, nebulous ideology. It has produced nothing for black women, let alone the black community. Even in the academic sense, nothing substantive can be taken away from it that couldn't already be found in mainstream feminism.
2. My interaction with black feminism, contrary to your belief, is not limited to online interactions. I went to college and law school with self-proclaimed black feminists and have had numerous discussions with them. Although each had different ideas/themes for black feminism, NONE could specifically tell me how black women benefit from black feminism or how the black community benefits from black feminism.
3. Ultimately, black feminism is divisive to the black community and provides more ammunition for the civil war between BM and BW. With this civil war ongoing, we lost sight of the systematic racism and injustice within dominant society. Moreover, it tears apart the black family unit.

Well, like I said, I manage mentoring programs for black girls and boys, and it is helping there. I've taught female prisoners who still thank me for helping them open up about their experiences with molestation and rape. And I'm married to a black man, and we don't have any beef about this issue. Our unit is strong. So, maybe it's about who you know and roll withI guess we'll agree to disagree.
That's very admirable of you and I thank you for doing that work. I genuinely believe that you're doing good work.
But my question is this: How is that a positive reflection on black feminism (or even mainstream feminism) instead of your individual work and effort? What does you being a black feminist have anything to do with your great work?
And I say, any black woman OR black man who supports having their black daughters, wives, sisters, and mothers rights and being treated fairly as a woman and as a black person is a black feminist, whether they embrace that term or not.
The guilty gone speak. A real feminist wouldnt be on a hip hop message boardname names![]()
why cant you just support black as a whole.
why cant you say im pro black?
why does it have to be only pro black for women?
if you are pro black for both black men and women(like you claim) then you are not really a feminist. you are just pro black like you should be without being under the willie lynch bullshyt and making war with your own people.![]()
