You don't know it but there is a stat boost with your job, and you'll get abilities as you continue to progress. And you get Linkshells by talking to people and or making one on your own. Crafting LS are something that can help with gil making but honestly you won't need it until post 50, and even then some of the best gear comes from drops.
As it stands gil is really only for FC houses and private rooms, stat boosting food and materia. Only the food provides and real practical boost, while materia is really only worth it for crafters and for i90 crafted gear. I know some people that made so much gil that they don't really have anything to spend it on. One guy bought his FCs mansion alone.
