Yeah this has to be a big reason why, XII was good but I gave little fukks about the characters or plot and there was potential with XV but too much missed opportunity with the backstory

My favorite FF are VII and X and they just happened to have the most engaging characters and theme for me, all of VI-X were like that
12 got screwed cuz the director got burned out tryin to meet the deadline and left halfway through development. Was same dude that made Tactics so no doubt the original 12 woulda been up there with the greats.

Balthier was the original main character but Square wanted a younger dude to lead so Vaan got tacked on later. He wasn’t even part of the game when the story was written. :heh:

balthier>> the rest of that sorry ass cast.:scusthov:

I read that Basch was supposed to be the main character though, and he was like in his 30s.

But Balthier was 22, a year older than Cloud, him as the protagonist would have been good

My main gripe with XII besides mostly forgettable characters and OST is that the plot didn't really engage me. It honestly felt like defeating Vayne/Cid actually made things worse since they were trying to save humanity, even if they were extreme in their methods, I never felt that way about the antagonists from the golden age where they were a massive threat to the world/universe + made life miserable for a likeable cast where you wanted them to succeeded. I wanted Cloud to defeat Sephiroth after all that shyt he put Cloud through, all of VI had a valid reason to want Kefka dead (especially Cyan, I mean, damn), but I gave little fukks about what XII's cast wanted to accomplish.

I trust they'll make this remake good because VII is too beloved for them to dare mess up, but not looking forward to XVI when it inevitably comes out

12 had something with the storyline but you can tell it got jacked up. It's connected to the later games of Tactics and Vagrant Story but to get that info you gotta read stuff outside the game. They dropped the ball on that big time.

There was some dope depth to the battle system even in the original but you had to dig way too deep to get much out of it. Game was very good but could've been a masterpiece.

The only reason 7 is called the best is because that's the first Final Fantasy game most people played.

7 was the first real main stream JRPG hit in America. Prior to that it was mostly a niche game genre.

Fred.
True. FF8 was the first Final Fantasy JRPG i ever played, back in '99/'00, and that shyt was GOAT to me. I played FF7 a year later and then FF Tactics, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, F9, Suikoden IV, and F10 before i lost interest in the genre. In retrospect FF8's supporting cast was kinda ass and maybe some other nitpicks but there's just something about being the first and not having anything (in mainstream America) to be benchmarked against. That was F8 for me, and F7 for a lot of others.

Final Fantasy 8 was a train wreck to me. The first disc was amazing. Once Rinoa becomes a witch it gets good again but the quality is all over the place.

I played 8 before I played 7 and I prefer 9 over both of them and 7 over 8.

The first disc won me over and i rolled with everything after. There was literally nothing i had played that compared to that; had just left sega genesis platformers for the early psx games like Tomb Raider II, Crash Bandicoot II, and WWE Smackdown.

So the idea of an open-world movie plot with branching dialogue, turn-based action, weapon/magic customization? Summoning demons, fighting dragons and using a gun sword? Shiiiid.

I liked the Squall/Rinoa pairing but i'd probably find that shyt sappy and her cringe-worthy if i had played it for the first time as i am now at 34 compared to when i was 13-14. The plot itself got jumbled and confusing but at that point i was just trying to level up and see the conclusion of Squal/Rinoa.

One thing about that game that completely went over my head that Laguna was Squall's father. I was 15 when that game came out so I probably wasn't paying attention to all the clues. The game never really came out and said it but heavily implied it.

I caught it that he was his dad but it just goes back to my retrospective thoughts that the supporting cast was ass. I didn't really care. It felt like either you were on board for the emo Cyclops/Jean Grey (Dark Phoenix) angle they were kinda going for with Squall/Rinoa (turned-witch) or you'd very well be :skip: to the entire plot.

Squall/Rinoa worked for me and even then, that shyt about them all growing up together or some shyt, i was just like :patrice:"whatever":hubie:

  1. FF Tactics
  2. FF8
  3. FF7
  4. Xenogears*
  5. FF9
  6. FF10
  7. Chrono Cross
  8. Suikoden 4

I'd probably have Xenogears #1 if not for that second disk being so left field.

12 could of been special if they didn’t add Vaan. When you play that shyt he has zero impact to the story. shyt he is just standing there most of the time.
