Nikki Haley, Lindsey Graham Withdraw Support for South Carolina Statehouse Confederate Flag

Governor Nikki Haley will call for the removal of the Confederate flag that flies outside South Carolina's statehouse, the Charleston Post and Courier reports, while CNN says senator Lindsey Graham will also say the flag should come down.

In the past, Haley and Graham have both defended the flag's prominent position. Said Graham in 2000 in the New York Times:

"There is a guy out there named Bubba. He grew up when public schools got integrated. He goes to work every day. There are women and African-Americans in the workplace and he's fine with that, but he thinks the whole world is against him and has rights he doesn't have. He thinks the flag is the last thing he has going for him and he's not going to take it down. I don't want to step on Bubba's feelings. There are no groups sticking up for the Bubbas of the world."
Because of a law enacted after a similar controversy in 2000, the flag can only be moved by a two-thirds vote of the South Carolina legisulature, which is not currently supposed to be in session but is meeting to resolve budget issues. The Post and Courier says that action on the flag issue could be shoehorned into bills related to the budget negotiations.

I'm not sure how this spiraled into a debate about flags but I'm happy this is done. Now if they'll just tighten gun laws. :beli:

....I don't like this...i mean I like the removal of the flag and all but watch as the GOP starts to shift its message to "see we're NOT really racist after all"...I mean suuureeee we supported and fought like hell ever since we lost the war via things like the southern strategy, jim crow, overt and covert systematic racism to keep minorities in their place, but by goodness ever since voters started viewing us like racists we decided to step away from that fight...

This shyt is just disingenuous to no end. It's step in the right direction for sure but let's not forget that 2 months ago these same people were defending that damn flag with all their hearts.

don't worry about that
the state not sanctioning the confed flag is a much bigger gain
what politicians say is transient, this move would be permanent

It's transient for sure but also very important as these are the people who quite literally run this country. Where and how they lead determines where and how we move into the future.

It disgusts me that the incumbency rate is so damn high and yet the approval rating is so damn low, IMHO it's the one very simple fact you can point to to highlight corruption in government and stupidity in populace.

you can't affect genuineness of politicians
they have their own agenda which is staying in the game
and will say anything to that end
all you can worry about is affecting their agenda and therein guide them to actions you want

Watching her live press conference, glad it's coming down. But she tried Baltimore in that conference........ Also she's justifying peoples love for the flag. ITS NOT THE CONFEDERATE STATES of AMERICAs flag for the last time, aka stars and bars. That flag with the St Andrew's cross was made in the 50s as a racist symbol that was in response to Brown v Board decision. Ppl are rewriting history and nobody has called them on it.
Show me a contemporary pic of that flag in the 1860s..... Nobody can cause it was made 100 years later.
Also what other place does a losers flag fly after a war? shyt makes no sense at all.

Designed by William Porcher Miles, the chairman of the Flag and Seal committee, a now-popular variant of the Confederate flag was rejected as the national flag in 1861. It was instead adopted as a battle flag by the Army of Northern Virginia underGeneral Lee.[30] Despite never having historically represented the CSA as a country nor officially recognized as one of the national flags, it is commonly referred to as "the Confederate Flag" and has become a widely recognized symbol of the American south.[31] It is also known as the rebel flag, Dixie flag, and Southern cross and is often incorrectly referred to as the "Stars and Bars" (the actual "Stars and Bars" is the first national flag, which used an entirely different design).[32] The self-declared Confederate enclave of Town Line, New York, lacking a genuine Confederate flag, flew a version of this flag prior to its 1946 vote to ceremonially rejoin the Union.

I'm gonna say thanks for making the point because i'd never given much thought to looking up the history of that piece of shyt flag but that blue cross with the X of stars (southern Cross) looks to have been in use back in 1865 at least. It's not a modern creation by any means.

It was an alternate flag and was never brought into battle. The stars and bars was the flag of the confederate army. In the 50s it was appropriated as a racist symbol. Sorry if I said it wrong, but it wasnt used back then as their flag, the design was around but it wasn't their flag. In the 50s people made a concerted effort to change history and make the flag we know today the confederate flag which it wasn't was my point.

The American flag also had alternates, doesn't mean they were the American flag is my point. Jefferson Davis would tell you the modern confederate flag wasn't the real flag, the stars and bars was. :salute: for bringing facts, shyts rare on the coli to have an educated convo bro.

Edit:stars and bars is the informal name in the south for the confederate flag. I grew up in Florida and everyone has called it that whether is a misnomer or not.
