Ted Cruz's team stands by campaign aide who compared Confederate flag removal to a 'Stalinist purge'

APIn a Friday, June 19, 2015 file photo, the Confederate flag flies near the South Carolina Statehouse, in Columbia, S.C.

Lee Bright, a local lawmaker who is serving as the South Carolina co-chair for the presidential campaign of Sen. Ted Cruz (R) compared the calls to remove the Confederate flag from the capitol building in his home state to a "Stalinist purge." According to a spokesperson for Cruz, those comments don't conflict with the candidate's position on the issue.

"What Senator Cruz has said is that this is an issue for the state of South Carolina and South Carolinians to sort out and I think that's what you're watching happen," Cruz campaign spokesman Rick Tyler said in a conversation with Business Insider on Tuesday evening.

The shooting at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina that left nine people dead on June 17 has reignited a nationwide debate over the flag. The alleged shooter, Dylann Roof, has been linked to a website that featured Confederate imagery and a racist manifesto. This prompted South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to call for the flag to be removed from the capitol on Monday.

Bright made his comment when he was asked about Haley's move by the Charleston Post and Courier. He elaborated on it in an interview with Politico that was published Tuesday.

"It’s not just the flag," Bright said. "They want to take down the Confederate monuments, I’ve gotten emails from people who want to rename streets … anytime you want to basically remove the symbols of history from a state, that’s something that just is very bad … these are honorable men who fought for their homes, their home state, to disgrace them in the name of political correctness is just wrong. They’re not here to defend themselves."

Bright told Politico the Cruz campaign had not discussed the issue with him, but he said he hoped presidential candidates would not tell South Carolina how to handle the issue.

"I would encourage presidential candidates to let us deal with this," Bright said. "It’s deeply rooted history for a lot of us. I’m not going to stand by and let our ancestors’ memories be besmirched. It’s one thing to just take down the flag. They want us to concede that the soldiers that fell for the Confederacy were a bunch of racists and I’m not going to concede that."

Tyler, the Cruz campaign spokesman, said the senator agrees with the notion the issue should be decided by people in South Carolina.

"The idea of outsiders coming in to South Carolina and telling them how they should deal with their issue, the senator ... I think correctly, his view is, let South Carolinians work it out amongst themselves and sort it out," Tyler said. "And that's what's happening, there's a disagreement of opinion, but that's part of the process."

Bright did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Business Insider.

After some thoughts I've come around to the opinion that the Confed flag should actually stay up. fukk it. For this flag to be removed, white supremacy must be removed. Until then...

It took the slaughter of 9 blacks at a church for these cac devils to scurry like hell and "correct a wrong". what the fukk is that? what does it mean when a week ago cacs had an tooth and nail allegiance to this flag and to the south?

Cac supremacy still exists regardless. Cacs are not waking up each day after this event feeling like they have a responsibility to end white supremacy. Infact it's the opposite. Racism to them in this country is somehow "everyone's responsibility" and not the ones who instilled it and continue to instill everyday. That alone should keep the flag up in its alignment to the state of every cac.

For these confed flags to stay up to me is just a good reminder for their supremacy, and everyone can see it.

Who’s Keeping Their Confederate Flags, Who’s Not

6announced that they would seek to remove the Stars and Bars from the state's capitol grounds. Said Haley, "150 years after the end of the civil war, the time has come." On Tuesday, state lawmakers voted to allow a special summer session to consider legislation for moving the flag.

Also on Monday, Mississippi state lawmakers including Republican Speaker of the House Philip Gunn indicated that they would seek a redesign of their state flag, which incorporates the Stars and Bars. Said Gunn, “We must always remember our past, but that does not mean we must let it define us. As a Christian, I believe our state’s flag has become a point of [offense] that needs to be removed." It's worth adding, however, that thus far Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant remains steadfast in opposition to changing the flag, the design of which was affirmed in a 2001 referendum. In a statement given today, Bryant said, "A vast majority of Mississippians voted to keep the state's flag, and I don't believe the Mississippi Legislature will act to supersede the will of the people on this issue."

Another area where the flag is prevalent across the South is on license plates, where the symbol is incorporated into vanity plates associated with the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Last week the Supreme Court ruled that Texas, and any other state, could reject the Confederate flag (or any other symbol) from appearing on state-issued plates. In Virginiatoday, Governor Terry McAuliffe, citing the divisiveness of the flag, ordered the symbol stripped from some 1,594 specialty plates, according to Virginia CBS affiliate WTVR. Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam,Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, and Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, all Republicans, have now said they want to eliminate the flag from their state's license plates as well, though how quickly those plans will play out is not yet clear.

Beyond simple iconography, there are still many other official vestiges of the Confederacy throughout the South, be they statues, monuments, or street names. In Tennessee, a bust of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest, the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, sits between the Senate and House chambers in the State Capitol. But according to theTennessean, over the past few days Governor Haslam, as well as the leader of the Tennessee Republican Party and a group of state lawmakers, have called for the bust to be relocated. Elsewhere, Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers, a Republican, has announced that he wants to move a statue of Confederate President Jefferson Davis out of the state's Capitol Rotunda, where the statue has stood since 1936. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also weighed in, telling the Carrier Journalthat he thought it was "appropriate" for the state to reconsider the location of the statue, adding that "maybe a better place for that would be the Kentucky History Museum".

States Keeping Confederate Symbols, for Now:

Looking at state flags across the South, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, and Georgia also incorporate Confederate symbolism into their state flag designs, and it's arguable that North Carolina and Tennessee do as well. So far, however, there do not seem to be serious efforts under way to make any alterations to those flag designs as a result of the current furor, though that may change quickly.

With regards to license plates, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, andSouth Carolina all still issue Sons of Confederate Veterans vanity plates with the symbol. Louisiana Governor and GOP presidential candidateBobby Jindal said Tuesday that he would not seek removal of the flag. In addition, on June 18, an official at Alabama's Department of Revenueindicated that the state would not discontinue the plate either.

And as mentioned earlier, there are still countless Confederacy affiliated statues, monuments, parks, and street names throughout every state of the South, and it remains to be seen how many will be addressed, or not, in the future. To see where many of these places are, check out this crowd-sourced map that Fusion has put together.

Retailers:

In the business world, CNN and ABC report that Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, as well as Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Sears (which also operates Kmart) have all pledged to stop selling merchandise that displays the Confederate flag. Prior to Amazon's announcement today, sales of the Confederate flag had gone up as much 3,000 percent in the last 24 hours. It's also worth noting that eBay, which allows the sale of potentially offensive items (like Nazi artifacts) if they possess some historical value, might still allow Confederate symbols to be sold in their marketplace should they fit that criteria.

This post has been updated to reflect additional information about lawmaker's positions across several states.

A 2006 article in Southern Mercury decried the judicial and legislative milestones of the Civil Rights Movement, asserting that in the 1960s, "The cultural Marxists relentlessly hammered away at Western cultural norms using the sledge of anti-racism as a battering ram to bring down the walls of traditional Western culture."

:ohhh: :ohhh: so this is where all those mra and pua fakkits on the internet got this talking point from, a bunch of confederate racists :ohhh: :dead: makes sense

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) quietly ordered the removal of the Confederate flag from the state Capitol grounds this morning, his office confirmed to local press.

When asked if this was due to the controversy over the flag following the shooting of nine black Americans at a church in Charleston, S.C., Bently said, “Yes, partially this is about that. This is the right thing to do. We are facing some major issues in this state regarding the budget and other matters that we need to deal with. This had the potential to become a major distraction as we go forward. I have taxes to raise, we have work to do. And it was my decision that the flag needed to come down.”

It was flying atop a Confederate monument on the statehouse grounds, reportedly a short walk from the governor’s mansion.
