Ahh lucky, How far does your family go back in NY? NY has great records. I know they have a State census every 5 years. When I was looking for my family records from the late 1890s I found out the US 1890 census was destroyed in a fire . New York and a few other states were the only ones with state census around that time.

Late 60's. We're kinda recent in NY.

I know this is unrealistic but I'm trying to find stuff at least during the slave days.

Not unrealistic at all, I though so too but I was amazed how much I could find. Had me like
I'm in the late 1700's with one of the lineages.
Do you know what county in NC your family came from? What is the decade,year, time period you're stuck at? You never know, your family could've been one of the free blacks living in the area ? maybe mixed natives?

My family comes from Wilson county. The time period I'm stuck in would be 40's.

It just the registry for the draft. At first i thought thats what it was too but almost every male between the ages 18-30 had to register.

Aww that sucks, was there a name change?
My relative changed their name and it's been hell finding anything pre name change.
