On a local level, these Pastor Troy sound-a-likes were popping up out a nowhere. Drama and Miracle were the biggest. Lil' Jon was bubblin. Luda dropped an indy with Incognegro and then his national debut Back For The First Time. Kast went way left with "B.o.B. Then dropped "Ms. Jackson" and suddenly the world was realizing how dope Outkast was and this wasn't even their best album.
Ruff Ryders and CMR was huge. I was a real big fan of Swizz's production back then. As unstoppable as both camps were going into 2000, it was like the game changed overnight and they started to cool off in the Fall of the year. Meanwhile Bad Boy had Black Rob and Shyne carrying the label in a major way after Mase left and Puff flopped. No Limit looked like it might be making a comeback with Goodfellas and Trapped In Crime, but squandered it with Ghetto Postage.
Nelly and Eminem owned the year. Dr. Dre had come back.
Three Six Mafia got their platinum supper with When The Smoke Clears. I remember buying this and "Act Like You Know Me" still gets me hype.
All eyes were on Lil' Kim and she dropped a brick with Notorious K.I.M.
Hearing "Big Pimpin" was a moment. I remember seeing some girl in Wal-Mart previewing Vol. 3 (who remembers the CD scanner at Wal-Mart that let you hear snippets of select songs from any cd). "Big Pimpin'" was blasting and she was rapping along to it.
