I remember being at a family function a while back and seeing a cpl younger kids on their phones. The thing that was incredible to me was that they were swiping so quickly from one video to another. Each video was just a few seconds so it was so fast. And the videos weren't necessarily related to the same or similar topics. It reminded me of how someone in the hospital might act if they have one of those morphine drip buttons. I understand wanting to watch a show, movie, music video or even playing video games. There is some sense of continuity....there seems to be some potential "reward" whether it's listening to a song you like, finding out the ending to an interesting show or beating someone at a game. But flipping CONTINUOUSLY through 30/40/50 straight videos, each of which are less than 10 seconds long, just seems like something else is happening.
Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat ect..is the same thing tho. It’s all meant to be scrolled endlessly, it may be abit more random than other platforms but the idea of any social media platform in the last decade or so has to been to keep your attention as much as possible. Tik Tok is different being that the algorithm doesn’t prioritize influencers but if you think it’s doing anything fundamentally different than the other platforms than you’d be wrong. The whole idea of an algorithm is to figure you out and your habbits, some platforms do it better than others. Imo all algorithm based platforms should be banned for good.
