I don't think this is a either or situation. On paper I agree with the OP but it's situations you come across that doing shyt the textbook way wont work. If you have someone not letting you merge like in the example above I would slow down and let both cars already on the highway pass . The Guy behind me can be pissed off but his honking lets me know he sees me and if I was to ease up on the gas he would have to slow down as well worst case scenario we be briefly stopped at the Tree before merging.
